Re: Dedicated bikepacking bike... to plus or not to plus?

I love 29+ - bomber handling for all day riding / natural terrain and the fact that you can just 'let-go' on the downhills - it will easily outroll regular tyred MTBs. On the subject of titanium, I had my custom 29+ built by Waltly Titanium in 2013 - they make 'branded' frames for quite a few people...

Re: Anyone got a BARYAK?

I've always worked on the assumption that provided the tri-bar is clamped on the handlebar centre bulge, it will be strong enough. As I said on your STW thread, a short-reach tri-bar like a draft-legal might work. The BarYak stuff is nice but expensive.

Re: SPOT Tracker Renewal Fees - Being Gouged?

I've just got rid - even though my credit card company refunded last year's fees on the basis of it being an unauthorised payment, my subscription remained live but I didn't use it. I eventually called them to cancel as didn't want to go back to my creditcard co and they even offered me the discount...

Re: St Ives area

Around St Just / Cape Cornwall there are lots of old mine working tracks that are good for exploring and you can ride around to Botallack and the cliff-top mine buildings. You can also ride from Porthtowan around to Chapelporth and to St Agnes Head - there's some fantastic exposed sections, as well ...

Re: Mini tools

Lezyne SV-10 or SV-11 - tiny and yet having used the chain tool to repair a mate's chain. I sometimes carry a Leatherman Squirt which has pliers, blade etc. I have a Topeak Hexus - it weighs more than the others combines and is a rusty lump.

Re: Delorme vs Spot review

Bit of a biased review but I'm relieved to be shot of Spot - mainly because of their gouging / "Hotel California" subscription policy. I'm going to hire an InReach for my next trip.

Re: Spot devices (again)

Mine went a bit wonky in the arctic last winter - but I was 4 days into an event and the -27C overnight probably didn't help. I'd checked-in the night before OK, before kipping down for the night but when I started again in the morning, Trackleaders had me 10km offcourse heading in the wrong directi...

Re: Inreach - SPOT alternative?

One of other racers at this year's Rovaniemi 300 had a Delorme Inreach which was the model prior to the Garmin acquisition. It's a bit bigger than a Spot, so it's real merit is as a combined tracker and GPS - but the screen is quite small and lower resolution in comparison to something like an Orego...

Re: Petzl Reactik + Head Torch - opinions and experiences?

Used daily when walking the dogs in the dark - it's quite effective and they are quite reliable. Not mega-lumens though, so OK for running but not enough throw for higher-paced activities IME. Weekly charge is good enough for 45 minutes for 5 days. Tried numerous others over the years from mega-chea...

Hub dynamos, USB chargers and stuff...

Just in the process of building up a front wheel with Exposure Revo hub and light and wondering how I'm going to wire-it together as I also have a Sinewave charger. Anyone got a preferred set-up as I'd rather have one wire from the dynamo up the forks?

Re: Pogies

I have Revelate Williwaws, used with H-bars for my 2 arctic trips of up to 5 days unsupported. They have a bungee attached to a special bar-end plus, so not problem with them slipping around. At -10C they could be used on their own and at -25C and below were OK with a Powerfleece liner glove, didn't...

The weight of 2x thermos was relatively trivial in comparison to the rest of the kit I was carrying:

My only luxury was the piece of reindeer hide - for sitting on the snow as an impromptu 'chest warmer' which I'd put under my jacket after a stop.

Re: Rovaniemi 2017

Really depends on the prevailing weather - if the temperature is above -5C then you can probably get away with regular bottles, bladders etc, but you need to keep water moving / out the wind to stop it freezing. I used a bladder under my jacket for the 150 in 2016 and it was OK, I also had an insula...

Re: Tyre widths and internal rim widths?

I've run 2.4" tyres on a Stan's Crest which is about that size - didn't encounter any problems. I'm not a heavy rider and didn't experience sidewall collapse, even at less than 20psi. My preference would be to go wide if it fits / clears - improved rolling resistance, grip and comfort for minim...
