Re: Bargain Alert Thread

Insane price for an Edge 830 on CRC. It's so cheap, I wonder if it's a pricing mistake, so don't tell anyone else

£148. I've had a price watch on these for over a year, and never seen them below £260

Re: My Opinions on Spot v Inreach

Bril, thanks for confirming. Really annoyingly I renewed my Spot sub last week, and it turns out you can't get a refund; grrr... so looks like I'll have to do this next year when I can cancel my spot. Still, gives me a year to find a reasonably priced inReach! Ta!

Re: My Opinions on Spot v Inreach

Wow, thanks for this post, I never realised you could get inReach without Garmin's subscriptions. The Protogear subscriptions look far better. Just to make sure I understand you right, you are paying the yearly fee (£49) and then just pay £2.50 for each day you use it and get tracking... then pay £0...

Re: Sawyer mini filter - not used in a while...

I got my Sawyer squeeze out on the WRT, having not used it over the winter. Got absolutely no water through it at all. Got home, watched a few videos, backwashed it with 1:4 white vinegar : water, and left it to soak in that for a few hours. Backwashed it again a few times. Now working perfectly. Ap...

Re: "Unison, Harmony or a System" - My ultimate bivi

I never realised they did a properly waterproof version of that Bivy; that's useful to know! I really like Bivies too, although even with eVent ones (which seem to be regarded as the best for breathing), I find I get a reasonable amount of condensation, especially if exposed to the sky. The only one...

Re: Last bike/next bike

Last I bought was a Kona Libre in 2020... Hardly ridden it because I just don't get on with skinny tyres and drop bars, so going to sell that. Previous was a custom Sonder Broken Road frame in 2018, which I love and is used for 90% of my riding 2016 Kona Hei Hei full sus (130/100mm 29er) which I don...

Re: For those who have ridden the West Country Way...

In Dartmoor and exmoor its fine. The bit in the middle is harder. I filled up from a grubby stream that wasn't great and in a little town. It only took 4hrs or so to ride between the two moors though. I think I carried 2 litres max... But I always drink an absolute tone at refill points to "tan...

Re: Garmin Edges

Related to this topic, does anyone know if the new Edges will read really old Garmin maps? I have some ancient (15yr?) old whole GB 1:50 & 1:25k OS maps which work fine in my 810. But I have always wondered, if the 810 eventually breaks, will they work in newer units, because I heard a rumour th...

Hello again! I have some brand new, completely unused RockShox 35 forks. Currently at 120, but removing travel spacers let's then go to 150mm I think. Steerer is pretty long, but if have to measure it

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

Another double BAM post from me! June Just went out for a fairly local BAM in June. I don't tend to sleep in woods, but fancied waking up to the birdsong. So plotted a route from the front door that went to a wood that I thought would be fairly protected from the wind (seems to have been never endin...

Re: The 2022 Tour Divide watchers thread.

Stephen Petty, the chap with the good "as it happens" YouTube videos is on the move again after a few days stop in Pinedale. Thought me might have scratched, so great he is moving again, and great he's keeping going, as he's obviously already had a couple of major issues requiring him to s...

Re: What's your current dream bike?

Strangely, I lust after getting rid of a bike! After getting a broken road, my other bikes get little use... But annoyingly all have a unique niche... Like my 150mm full sus that basically only gets ridden in the Alps. Currently my target for off loading is my Kona Libre gravel bike, as I just don't...

Re: The 2022 Tour Divide watchers thread.

I've been watching Stephen Petty's videos too (they are good for those that haven't). The Lauf fork thing surprised me... I thought they were pretty durable... Looking at him and his kit, I doubt he's over the weight limit... Anyone else heard of Lauf failures like this (where the lead springs go al...

Re: best bearings for a hope BB ?

I presume you can buy them aftermarket, but try to get a hold of the Hope ceramic bearings. I bought a Hope BB (external Hollowtech II type) with ceramic bearings in 2008. It has been on whatever has been my main bike has been ever since, so 14 years and thousands and thousands of kms. Still going s...

Well I have been truly rubbish at posting my BAM trips this year - way too much going on at work and other commitments, so here is a bumper post to cover February to May! February I've fancied trying to do some night sky photography for a while. So one day we were going to my parents. The weather wa...

Hey Jase,

If you would consider selling just the rear of the Hope Hoops 29er set, I'd be very interested. But totally understand if you don't want the faff!

Re: Bottle cages on the top tube.

I have a bottle on the top tube of both my bikes, just in front of the seat post. I use a Monky cage too on my full sus. Works fine, but I did snap one tightening it right up. Helps if you wrap an inner tube under it to make it grip a bit better. Had bottle bosses added to the top tube of my hard ta...

Re: USB-powered AA battery charger

That's a nice little unit. I am slightly suspicious of their charge times though... My mains Nimh smart charger takes far longer to recharge batteries than that. One other point, don't assume Lion is expensive... the Xtar Pb2s 18650 Lion USB smart charger is only £16ish and 18650s aren't that expens...

Nice presentation, although "gravelmap" seems a bit of a miss-naming. Just seems to be a nicely presented set of bike routes. Quite useful how all the segments are bolded so you can see where they are easily. I like the fact that Black Sail Pass and Scarth Gap appear on a website called &q...

If you want a new event one with a long zip, then I *think* the Mld Soul is the only game in town. My family got me one for Christmas and after a couple of bivy a month uses so far, I'm liking it.... Especially the very long zip. I'm less keen on the fairly small mesh window, but it gets the job don...

+1 for Orux Maps. I've used it for years, and it really is excellent. You can load tonnes of different map formats into it (online and offline) and it allows you to download online maps to save on your device from the app itself. Topo 4umaps in the "World" section of online maps is a good ...

I'm no materials scientist, but I'd have thought this type of cracking / splitting is going to be a problem with anything made of silicone / rubber eventually, just because of the material. Not exactly the same, but I find double sided velcro, of the type Alpkit and a few others distribute with thei...

Re: Thermarest Xlite Warmth Over the Years?

Yeah, realise that the ASTM was just a ratings change... I was wondering if the Xlite had been improved over the years to actually make it warmer. I.e. before the rating changes, was the pad actually more insulative than the original model that I have? I had a thought while typing this that I could ...
