Re: Bike packing full suspension frame/ bike recommendations
I'm on an Orbea Occam TR. Bought it for similar situations and love it. 130mm travel. Carbon and alloy versions available depending on budget. There's two different travel versions in the range iirc. Newer frames look less amenable to a frame bag

Re: Hammock in the garden
The shallower the angle of the suspension the greater the force - in theory if your hammock was strung perfectly horizontal there'd be an infinite force acting on the wall I think you might need to check your working there Bob  But it's a fair point... Although with the right fixings and appl...

Re: Hammock in the garden
Ah, yeah that arrangement does need more space. Is there anything (e.g wall) you could attach one end to?

Re: Hammock in the garden
I've got a hammock in the garden - it is indeed a lovely place to be on a sunny afternoon. I've put rings on the uprights of my covered deck to hang it from now, but it came with a stand of sorts: each end has two lengths of wood with an eye bolt through one end so they open out into an A-frame. The...

Re: Travelling across Europe quickly - how?
Probably not relevant to the OP, but I just stumbled across this relates article about a new sleeper service. Doesn't mention bikes though.

Exped Downmat clumping... maybe
I thought I had an issue with my Exped Downmat with the down clumping at one end of the mat... but I'm not actually sure. I can feel a soft lump all across the end of the mat where the valve is and where the chambers are linked together. I inflated in and tried to work the down, er, down and with a ...

Re: Cranktank 3 vs cages on fork + smartwater bottles
Agree with most of the above really. Personally I use a 1.5 or 2l bladder, and that's just about enough for cooking an evening meal, morning coffee, breakfast, minimal washing up and general hydration for that time. I often use a filter, but to be honest, if I come across a tap not long before I'm g...

Re: packable fleece?
If you always have to wear the shell to make sure you don't lose all the heat kept in by the mid layer, then that doesn't sound like a very flexible system. A layer should be removable if the conditions don't need it. My cheapo base and fleece(s) are warm and I add a U/L rain top if it rains or is ...

...and brought a new GRX mech to replace the 105 one that exploded spectacularly the other day. Thought while I was replacing it, I might as well get something that will cope with a larger cassette without swapping the goat link in and out, shift better, and... be more clutchy. But I can't escape th...

Re: Is this 'bikepacking'?
Of course, Cycling UK were formerly CTC, the Cyclists Touring Club, and if I remember rightly there was a bit of disquiet amongst more traditional members when the Club both embraced MTBs and then changed their name. It's perhaps a little ironic that bikepacking possibly reflects a shift back to th...

Re: Is this 'bikepacking'?
I knew exactly what this was going to be about before I opened it  I read the same article and thought "that's not what I would call bikepacking", shrugged inwardly and carried on with my life. My wife, who isn't a bikepacker, but has a vague understanding of what I do, happened to re...

For me it's the ability to access snacks without getting my hands covered in muck. Particularly symptomatic of the winter we've had I think!
