Re: The pickled egg (and other bar snacks) thread
Not sure I could face one. My wife used to work behind the bar in the pottergate tavern in Norwich many moons ago. During a heat wave someone threw a pickled egg through the blades of the big metal fan that was minding it's own business oscillating on the bar. Surface to say the smell was pretty pot...

Re: packable fleece?
I really rate the Rab alpha fleece.
Very light and quite packable, super breathable and warm under a thin Montane windshell. Remove the windshell and you can dump heat instantly so very flexible used together.

Re: Monks trod - wtf
I've ridden it a couple of times. Let's be honest unless theyre planning on tarmacing it, once it's had a load of 4wd go over it it's not going to be any better on a bike.
Seems like a crazy waste of money to trash a wild space.

I remember that shaf - it was a well used wingnut hyper 2.5 pack I also bought off here to see if I got on with them. The main zip needed replacing (it's a waterproof one from memory)

Re: Lowest useable gear
Bit late to this but another idea for you - My stooge is a 32 front with an 11-46 cassette. (27.5 x 2.8 wheels). I find it great for day rides but wanted something lower for when it's loaded up with bags, etc As the front is an old double cranks I added a granny ring (but no front derailleur), if th...

The dhb one which is lined with polartec alpha is very good. Breaths well and adds a suprising amount of insulation for very little extra bulk. Roadie cut though if that's a concern

I walked in a few years ago and ended at the pub. Had very high hopes but was a bit underwhelmed. Seemed to have gone a bit posh and boaty and wasn't massively welcoming. Mediocre pint too

Wheel building
I've decided for a new year project I'm going to teach myself to build a wheel.
I know there is an ebook / pdf guide that lots of people recommend. Can anyone point me to it please?
I'd also like a recommendation for calculating spoke length if anyone has a good one they use.
Cheers

Re: Winter Bivvy?
I appear to be tied up 16-17 now, can probs still make next weekend. There's some shelters (3 sides and a roof, but concrete floor) in Thetford Forest (you can see it from the red route), and indeed in their playground areas you could probs camp down somewhere. Could almost ride round during the da...

Re: Whats your trouser of choice?
I'm a recent convert to MTB trousers for riding.
Had some Madison zenith but moved them in after a couple of rides - found them too loose and a bit short for tall and skinny build.
Got some endura mt500 burner and very happy. Nice fit and plenty of leg length.

Re: WTD 10 spee Shimano road sti levers
I've got a set of the old 105 series (ST 5700). Ideally, would like to flog them with an old 11-36 cassette and chain, plus a non-series 10 speed mech (RD-R350-10-SS). Oh, and some Spyre disc calipers. £50 the lot? Cursing my impatience  I would have bitten your hand off but just pulled the t...

WTD 10 spee Shimano road sti levers
The ratchet has died on my commuter / gravel bike.
Is anyone hoarding a pair of 10speed shimano sti levers they'd part with?
(Or maybe just a front one if it's 105)

Re: Dealing with the damp
Brynje and a paramo jacket if you know it's going to stay wet. If not riding with mudguards (which makes the biggest difference) I made some waterproof short a few year ago from German army gortex cut off trousers. They have braces and a panel the extends well up you back under your jacket so no spr...
