Romania Notes

After a week hiking in Romania, I wrote these notes with a view to future bikepacking trips. They may be useful to folks here, as there does not seem to be much info on the country. Romania is an underrated country. The food is good, esp fresh fruit and veg, sausages, cheese and wine. It’s cheap to ...

Re: bombtrack beyond 1: buy or dont buy

Thanks folks - I'm suitably encouraged!

I'd probably go for the fargo, but its a bit beyond my range, and i'd probably go for the kona sutra, but it seems they wont be in stock will march.

bombtrack beyond 1: buy or dont buy

Oh wise folk of bearbones, lend me bike advice. I've owned and loved a Surley krampus for a couple of years but (a) i've moved away from the mountains and beaches of scotland to oxford and (b) its been nicked. So I need a new bike. My trips always involve a bit of road / double track touring and so ...

Re: Chiltern Spring Thing 2018

Well, that was a fun weekend. I got into Lewknor about 1pm. That route back over worked out well, although I needed to haul my bike over a few too many kissing gates on the accidental footpaths. And the bus driver looked a nonplussed with the inch of mud on me and everything I own. Thanks for the ph...

wanted: your old touring/gravel/mbt bike

Hi People, I need a bicycle on short notice for a tour on tracks and roads in Andalucia. Any of the following would be ideal: - Touring bike like a Dawes Galaxy. - Gravel / cross / adventure bike, like e.g., a croix de fer. Nothing too racy - saddle at handlebar height. - Audex bike so long as there...

Spring time route suggestion

So I think I'll take a friend on a trip come spring time, maybe April. May I pick your minds for suggestions? Our criteria are - Dry and not too cold in April. So I gues Sthern Europe or Nth Africa. - Dirt roads rather than technical single track. I'll be on Krampus but she has a touring bike. I'll ...

In some countries chemists are also a good bet. You can get 1L bottles of methanol/surgical spirit.

At 9pm, me and my lady took grabbed the tent, bottle of wine, left over curry, and drove out to the cliffs in south Aberdeenshire. Amazing evening skies, big full moonrise and then very shortly after, sunrise. Woke up early and watched the thousands of guillimots, razorbills, and kittwakes doing the...

Re: oddest place you've bivvied?

As a teenage backpacker in I arrived late in Cadaques, Spain (where Dali lived) and slept on the beach with a few friends. We drank vodka, lit some candles, and set an alarm. I woke up to an alarm clock that was both ringing and on fire. Dali indeed. Don't know why, but bivving in a cave is a strang...

Tubeless: skills and spares needed?

Hello Good People, I bought a second hand krampus with "ghetto tubeless" surly knards. I've never had tubeless tires before and so advice needed before solo trip to the mountains: - I don't need to bring a spare tube, do I? They weigh a ton. - What tools/spares do I need to fix a flat/side...

I'll be in touch at some point, have this area as 'up next'! Stunning scenery. Thanks. Was around September a good time to be there? Do indeed Jameso - happy to advise. Early September was perfect, but earlier in the year would be fine too. I met a bunch of people going up in late sept early octobe...

Re: Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan

Yup, after visas and flights, there's not much to spend money on until you hit the cities, which are best avoided a lot of the time. Iran in particular was brilliant. Definitely lots of bikepacking potential there, esp in the Zagros mountains. Longing to go back now that I have a beefier bike. Tajik...

I've used the Bike Buddy Mk3 for exactly this: little fiddly to set up but works a treat. No problems with stability or durability.

Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan

Hi People! Last year I took 3.5 month trip through central Asia and Iran. This section on the Pamirs (a shortcut through the Bartang valley) was a highlight. It's also what convinced me that I needed to ditch the panniers and get over some big tires. So, an appropriate first contribution to the foru...

Ahh, now I get it. If you select a photo from within the "camera roll", you get the bendy arrow option but not the BBcode. If instead you select the photo from within an album, the image becomes larger and the bendy arrow again appears. This time, however, the bbcode is present. [url=https...
