Shelter clear out.

I'm intending to rationalise my ever growing collection of shelters as I now need the space to accommodate myself and a big dog not just myself as was previously the case. With this in mind I have a few shelters/tents that I am planning to move on. Number one on the list is my much loved SMD Gatewoo...

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

I've had a couple of frames off them (Camino and a Camino ti) which have been really good. I'm not convinced that they're the paragons of virtue that they sometimes imply but they're not the worst either.

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

Just saw this as well. Wonder if Alpkit are struggling? They did seem to go all in with Sonder, I wonder if they've been caught out by the great bicycle bubble burst? Possibly clearing stock and managing cash flow to fund egravel bike stock? It's the mtb's that are on SP . Wasn't there an announcem...

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

Endura MT500 waterproof jackets (blue only) for £89.99 +postage on SportPursuit. I couldn't resist at that price. They had all sizes when I ordered (not sure what's left now). I've read mixed reviews of these (varying from rave to indifferent) but as I said I couldn't resist a £270rrp jacket for £8...

Re: Gravel forks , anything mounts or not

Fwiw, I have anything cage type mounts on the fork on my gravel bike and have never used them (although I did do on my previous gravel frame). I like the idea of carrying stuff low down like that but the aero drag of having luggage out in the wind like that is significant imho. It would be much bett...

Re: Dub bottom.brackets are they rubbish?

I've had the same experience with DUB BBs as well. I have one in my Orbea Rallon and although I don't ride it very often and even less in rain and mud conditions the original failed very quickly. I went with another DUB BB as they are relatively cheap but I know I should have bitten the bullet and f...

Re: Are you a hoarder?

My hoarding is with things that I perceive as being valuable as well (like tents), it's not like I'm saving milk bottles full of pee or anything. The problem is that my wife doesn't share my opinion that they're valuable, she values the space that would be created if they were gone more! I feel like...

Re: Are you a hoarder?

I was hoarding a load of 26inch stuff for years and years, had a clear out last year to make way for another bike. Local bike charity didn’t want to know or rather made it very awkward to drop it off (who opens Monday to Friday only 10am to 3pm… seriously!!) so dropped it off at the tip as a bloke ...

Are you a hoarder?

I suspect I know what the majority of people will say in response to the question but I was just curious. The reason I ask is that I recently bought a new (to me) tent off eBay. I have lots of other tents but they've all been bought for specific tasks and don't really overlap in terms of usage (at l...

Re: DIY Ghetto Tyre Inserts

I just fitted a new rear tyre to my eeb today (Maxxis DHR 2.4) and had to remove the old tyre and fit the new one with the backer rod insert in place. It is a bit fiddly but it's fine once you've broken the seal at the bead getting the old tyre off. Refitting, you need to work the insert into the ri...

Re: DIY Ghetto Tyre Inserts

Don't the inserts keep the beads in place so you can set the tyre back up tubeless with a hand pump after patching the tyre? Pete, who I was riding with quite a bit on the Highland Trail, managed this after a spectacular puncture - plugs didn't work so he bunged in a tube - when it let go he bunged...

Re: DIY Ghetto Tyre Inserts

What is the benefit of this? Run flat as dlovett says but also bomber protection for your rim and the ability to run low tyre pressures for more grip. Tbh I don't use inserts on my bikepacking bike just in my long travel trail/enduro bikes. The benefits would be the same for bikepacking but in the ...

Re: DIY Ghetto Tyre Inserts

Thanks for that info very helpful. What diameters did you use in the various wheel sizes you mentioned? Thanks I just bought one batch of 40mm diameter backer rod but you may want to try a smaller diameter if you plan to run narrower tyres. 40mm fitted into my 2.4/2.5 WT Maxxis tyres and 2.6 WTB Ra...

Re: DIY Ghetto Tyre Inserts

That's what I used (and bought from that company). I ended up buying 19m of the stuff because it was (relatively speaking) so cheap (I've given loads away to friends to try). I've found that one length is perfect for 27.5 but I've had to splice a bit extra on to make it long enough for 29. The tyres...

Re: Tyre Patches

When I've had a large hole to repair I've always put a tube in and ridden it like that for a week after my repair. My logic is that the tube would pressurise the repair from the inside and force the patch onto the tyre. I've never had one fail after doing this. Just for info, I've also successfully ...

I've had multiple sets of Shimano brakes and never had a problem with this until recently. I used to read these threads and wonder what people were doing wrong with their Shimano brakes. All that changed with my most recent bike acquisition (a Giant Reign E+1). It came with Shimano XT 4 pot brakes (...

Some great advice being handed out in this thread. I'm 59 and will be retiring from my full time/long term job next March. Re: Puncture Protection

So going the ghetto route with closed Cell Circular Polyethylene Foam Backer Rod, what's the size to tyre ratio I want to look for? With 650x47 tyres in a 23 internal rim, do I want 30, 40, or 50mm rod? Happy to give it a go at £1.9/m rather than spend £70 per wheel. Not sure for your tyre sizes bu...

As usual Cairngorm are behind the curve (in diversifying into mountain biking) and just as is the case with their winter infrastructure this development sounds like it should be a resounding flop. Honestly, I wonder how they're still operating at all. They seem to make a point of not listenin...
