Re: Orbea occam any experiences

I don't have an Occam but I do have a Rallon as my full on trail bike and it's really, really good. On that basis alone I reckon the Occam would be well worth a look. Sorry I can't be more help but after seeing ScotRoutes picture above it's just too much of a coincidence not to post a pic of my Orbe...

Re: Blue Lake - an end of an era

Hmm, not just gel wrappers. How many times have you seen a discarded inner tube lying by a trail or thrown in the bushes. I dunno what the answer is for us Brits (or even if there is an answer). Earlier this year I drove back from the Alps after a ski holiday and the difference between the rubbish a...

Re: Rear Rack a Retrograde Step?

A quick search reveals lots of front mini racks that look very similar (albeit the brackets may require modification).

Re: Rear Rack a Retrograde Step?

The only thing that would put me off is the use of P clips ... and what looks like duct tape. Otherise, can't see an issue  I thought that the duct tape gave added character to the bike. Not keen on P clips either but neither do I fancy a big metal loop sticking out the back of my seat ...

Re: Rear Rack a Retrograde Step?

I'm struggling to see any real negatives with this idea (other than the small additional weight). I too have a "swinging" Alpkit 1st gen seat pack and have been considering ways to improve it. The fact that Alpkit themselves have developed that sticky outy metal thing that clamps into your...

FWIW I've never dealt with a more unpleasant, untrustworthy and dishonest company. I'd call them scum but that's unfair to any sub standard you find floating on the top of fetid pools. No need to hold back, say what you really think! I've only had limited dealings with them and those have bee...

Re: So I spoke with Marc (TrekkerTent) re. Stealth

I too have a Stealth 1 and I concur that it's a pita to get in and out of when the outer is wet (I'm 6' tall and not especially thin  ). Stuart, I'd be very interested in the A frame pole (I already have your alu upright poles which are great other than the access issue). I know walkers use th...

A bit late to the party but it's all positive feedback from me and SWMBO regarding our bamboo shirts as well. I'd definitely be up for a couple more if there's another batch. :-bd

Re: What sus fork?

I put a Rockshox Gold 30 on my Ramin 1. it's pretty good for the money but obviously a bit twangy (with 30mm stanchions) compared to most modern forks which are more beefy. I went with the q/r version so that I could use my original wheels but the bolt through options would presumably be a bit stiff...

Re: msr trailshots??

I paid about 35 quid for one a couple of months ago. It's been worth every penny imho, compact, very easy to use and gives peace of mind (especially after reading tales of people getting seriously sick on the HT550 this year).

Re: Sorry to ask - what pedals?

Thirty quid Nukeproof Electrons/Neutrons for me too, just pop the end cap off every now and again and pump some grease in and they last for ages. Used to have Mag V12s with Ti axles, cost a fortune and were heavier and less grippy than the Nukeproofs.

Re: Luxe Sil Hex Peak - opinions?

Yep, the seam sealer that comes with the tents won't adhere to the silnylon fabric (madness I know). I used Silnet as well and diluted it with white spirit to make it easy to apply with a small paint brush. I think diluting it also helps it to penetrate right into the seam. Apparently you can also u...

Re: Luxe Sil Hex Peak - opinions?

I've got one and really like it. I had the original Hexpeak which I also liked but found too short for me (at 6 feet tall and using a thick mat) and so I sold it on. I missed it so much that when the slightly larger V4a came out (addressing my issue with the original version) I couldn't resist buyin...

Re: Scottish Paths - Maintenance / Repair / Upgrade?

The Glencoe side of the Devil's Staircase was "improved" some years ago, no-one seems to complain about that these days. Maybe its current state suits mountain bikers? Yes and the Kinlochleven side was done (at a guess mid to late nineties) as well. I remember riding it in the early ninet...

Re: Highland Trail 550 - 2018

I met Peter ( Admiraal, the Dutch guy who started a reverse attempt but scratched) at Ben Alder Cottage on Wednesday. I was out doing a couple of day ride that happened to include Ben Alder Cottage and he rolled in on his way back to Tyndrum (still riding the route backwards). He was curious for new...

Cheapo alternative to a Tubolito?

I've been pondering the Tubolito thread (started last autumn http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10974 )and my "How many spare tubes do you carry?" thread started a couple of weeks ago and it dawned on me to ask whether anyone has considered carrying a 700C tub...

Marc told me that one of the most time consuming jobs (and one that slows him down a lot) is seam sealing the silnylon tarps and tents. My tent was ordered and delivered during the winter months and he said that the seam sealant takes longer to cure in colder, damper conditions which meant he ended ...

I have a Stealth 1 that I bought a couple of years ago. During the purchase process I became seriously concerned that I was going to be ripped off and not get my tent having paid up front for it. Marc was really helpful when I initially made inquiries about the Stealth but once I'd done the deal it ...

Re: Yet again - Leave No Trace.

Oh and in the world of canoeing, the problem is much worse apparently.... Yeah, as a semi-active paddler I can confirm that a camp fire is de rigueur for many participants. I would say though that the use of fireboxes is pretty widespread which limits the impact somewhat. To be honest I don't think...
