Re: Bivi bag and down jacket?

A lot actually depends on you and whether you sleep warm or cold. Personally I sleep cold, something to do with my body's lack of insulation perhaps, and need a warm sleeping bag even in fairly mild weather.

Another Wildcat user. Shown here with a 20l dry bag (not stuffed full) and the extra Wildcat bag thingy (whatever it's called) on the front for my camera other bits and pieces.

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

That's not what I said, that's your interpretation  To qualify my comment a bit; with risk there are degrees of probability, the extreme ends of the probability curve being situations you describe as freak accidents. However, even at the extreme end, only a small % of those are totally incap...

Re: Taking your bike on the train

This coming Sunday I am booked to go from Dovey Junction to Knighton via Shrewsbury. I was able to book my my bike on the train to Shrewsbury but the train from Shrewsbury to Knighton doesn't allow your bike to be booked ahead and I was told just speak to someone at Shrewsbuty station once I was the...

Re: HT550 2016 ITT starters

... I'm very wary of the apparent safety net the SPOT provides. It doesn't make things out there any less of a risk. If you get to the point where you have to press the SOS button, you've failed in moderating that risk - either through poor kit choices or over extension of bike/mountain/survival ab...

Re: Who's warm and dry

I'm warm and dry, lovely sunny morning here in Milton Keynes, might even have a BBQ! I've been out and done 20 miles on my MTB this morning, looking for new bridleways. They're drying out nicely now.

Re: tarp tent help

Take a look a the Zpacks stuff, I'm thinking of the Altaplex and maybe the Duoplex. Both very light and spacious in both height and width. They are a bit pricey though but I think they're probably worth it... well I hope they are, I have just ordered an Altaplex so can tell you what I think of it in...

Re: Sleeping Mats - What and where to carry

Being a newbie bikepacker I'm still working on where to put stuff but the last time I was out my Exped UL7 fitted nicely in my frame bag, rolled up tightly and in the original bag it came with.

Re: Undershort Suggestions

So I assume you don't wear those under another pair of shorts? I don't personally. I stick a pair of Ronhill Tracksters over the top when it's too cold. Hoping at least one of them isn't sub standard, or it's time to move to bibs... Some manufactures make shorts as well as bibs of the same version ...

Re: Undershort Suggestions

Whilst I can't help the OP with undershirts I'll join in and tell you what I do wear; Endura Fs260 pro 2 (I think) shorts, not bibs. Seem to be quite comfy for the rides I'm doing at the moment, 40 to 60 miles, and just ordered another pair. Half the comfort battle is the saddle though and I'm curre...

Yep, list maker here. Makes it easier for me to pack because there is less thinking to do, and helps me not forget anything. I love knowing the weights of things too.

Re: Framebag width?

I've got a custom Alpkit frame bag and had the same thoughts on the width. In the end I went for 6cm, no divider, surgeon opening. 6cm - because some of my frame tubes are about that width anyway and I wanted maximum space from the fairly small frame triangle. No divider - because I didn't want to r...

Re: Taking your bike on the train

So when you're stood there on the platform with your bike and the train pulls up, where do you put your bike. Does the guardsman jump out and tell you?

Re: Taking your bike on the train

Thanks for all your responses. Where are you based? I'm in Milton Keynes so that's Virgin Trains and MIdland if I'm travelling from home but I'm thinking about all round the UK.. and it seems to be different depending where you are. So it's not really possible to book via Trainline, I've never seen ...

Taking your bike on the train

Something I'm unsure about at the moment is taking a bike on the train, I'd like to hear your experiences and advice please. Is it easily done? Do I have to book in advance or can I just get to any station with my (muddy) bike and take it on the train? Does my bike go in a special carriage? Can I ju...

bikepacking route suggestions

Hi, In mid May I have time for a bikepacking trip and I'm looking for suggestions. I've thought about the Trans Cambrian ITT (it's unfinished business but the transport back to Knighton looks like it might be problematic). Maybe the BB200? Where can I download the 2015 route?). The Peaks 200 looks O...

Re: Charging Garmins on the move

Depending on your Garmin you may not need to charge while you ride and just charge from the cache battery at the end of the day. That's my intention with my Garmin Edge 500, the battery lasts for 18 hours. That's assuming you are touring. If you're on an 'all night get it done ITT' then ignore what ...
