Re: Dirty Reiver: 200k UK Gravel event

Don't worry I am worrying about training, I'm always worrying about training  Just thinking for the distance if it's CX/gravel road type thing that something a little swifter than the 2.3 tyres I just wrangled on to the bike might be in order. If my mate can make it he'll be on a CX and leaving...

Re: Dirty Reiver: 200k UK Gravel event

Mmmm... decisions, decisions. Need to persuade a mate up here he wants to do it too to share the ridiculous cost of getting down for it.

Any thoughts on suitable tyres for a 29er hardtail? I'm thinking some slimmer, not too aggressive ones??

Re: Tyre and Rim Technical help

Had a total nightmare with Geax Sturdy 29" 2.3's the other weekend on WTB i19 rims. Ended up doing both wheels twice as I nipped the tubes in the struggle ! Took me hours so by the time they were done it was dark and wet. I had a major sense of humour failure and hope to God I don't punc...

Re: new to winter bike packing

That gatewood Cape/tarp looks interesting. Anyone know how it compares to a trailstar or use in open windy conditions? I live in a treeless place. Is the shower curtain for additional coverage on an open tarp front / ground sheet or something else? Been thinking about a trailstar for a while. I have...

Re: GPS for long trip

Yeh I second smart phone with gps app ( if you.haven't already a gps) I use maverick pro with 1:25k OS or cycleways. £30 for a USB power block. Keep it on airplane mode as much as possible and it'll last plenty.

Re: Map/Route planning tool, call for input

I use maverick pro on my android for both work and leisure and find it excellent with the range of maps and satellite imagery. The wapypointing functions that allow photos and notes to be made are particularly useful for work. Last year I was in East Greenland with only 1:100,000 maps available but ...

Re: scottish c2c official route?

Trail rat that GPX wouldbe useful. Definitely a route for me as the ferry drops me off in Aberdeen so I can just get the train like you did and cycle back for the ferry home  I did the Deesside way linked to the Speyside way via Loch Builg this year and fancy something a bit more challenging f...

Re: It almost makes you want kids.

Cheers! Will have a look. I think my lad will grow out of it too soon looking at sizes as he's at the top of their recommended range. Found I can get 0% finance on a frog bike at tredz so may go that route, not so cool but great bikes and cheaper still.

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?

That sounds like a great resource, thanks! I've downloaded it and want to view it on a PC but can't figure out what to do. I've downloaded garmin basecamp but despite searches and trying a few things I can't figure out how to load it up to view it. I don't have a garmin GPS (well an old Etrex 10 tha...

Re: helmet, yes or no?

Yep all the time. Had a couple times when it would have been a life changer without it. Once just playing chase with my 7 year son on flat tarmac area on Xmas eve. Chain snapped and I headbutted tarmac. As it was it spoilt Xmas with cracked ribs and bruising, without helmet there'd have been no Xmas...

Re: travelling with bike, by train.

I recently took my bike on Scotrail for the forst time. No problem booking the bike and me on via their phone booking line but... When the train came it wasn't a guards van but an area at the side of the entrance with a very large fixed rack. The rack couldn't be move in anyway so after the faf of r...

Re: First trip; a few days in the Cairngorms(ish)

So, I made it around my planned route. Probably about the right level of challenge for my level of fitness and a first trip. Here's my blogpost with a write up, video and GPX of the sections. Sorry for the sound quality on the video it was pretty breezy at times and I can't use an external mike with...

Great cover in poor weather and good in a wind. I was on a trial overnig...

Re: Using a Blizzard bag through choice?

How does the sol escape compare to the sol emergency bivy? I bought the emergency bivvy (when i meant to buy the escape) a couple of years ago thinking to use it as a heat reflective bivy bag over a light sleeping bag (under a tarp not in the open), but I've never actually used it. Being generally a...
