Re: Advice Needed - Joining from the Dark Side

A family trip flying to Bergen and train to Voss and Flam with a ride down the Rallarvegen and walking Aulandsdalen area. A mix of site and wild camping and looking about then a ferry back from Flam to Bergen. Never been before and really looking forwards to it.

Re: Advice Needed - Joining from the Dark Side

Hi Andy, I have an Alfine 8 wheel, 2 in fact, and can attest to their reliability and general ruggedness. I was in Shetland last year, and plan to go back in May or June this year for a week or so, amazing place. I live in the Cairngorms so it would seem that we are due to pass each other on the wa...

Yeh never really had an issue with soot anyway, but learnt my lesson. I'd rather risk a mucky pan than a cold one!

Re: Meths stoves

I just have a little square of foam wrapped in foil that I sit my popcan stove on. Yeh, not so stable but I'm just careful when balancing my mug on it. Windshield is just a heavy duty tin foil wrap around that goes about half way up my mug. I've notched some holes in the bottom to allow some air fee...

Re: MYOG trailstar copy...

Haha! Its my sewing machine :???: Yeh it will be a bit smaller than the real TS due to fabric size. The triangle heights are only just under 1.50cm and just under 2m along the base of each triangle when sewn. Still plenty of space for 2 though. The height it as at is the max height for it can go at ...

MYOG trailstar copy...

I should be out as it's a gorgeous icy day up here with no wind, but I got distracted last night an made a start on a MYOG trailstar with cutting out patterns and then couldn't sleep this morning so spent 5 hours putting it all together. I had intended to buy one but the lead time, shipping and impo...

Re: Why don't you buy bike magazines?

I don't buy any magazines for biking or other interests.

They're too pricey, but mainly they're just too full of adverts and reviews of gear that I couldn't afford and I'm not some one who's after the latest xyz or constantly upgrading.

They don't really relate to me or my life style.

Re: Best / worst prezzie?

Why banned from bike related prezzies? I've obviously been a very bad boy  To be fair we were seriously limiting what we spent on each other in preference to kids and other family. Most bike/outdoors stuff I'm after was beyond budget anyway and I suppose bike consumables were not seen to be muc...

Best / worst prezzie?

I was banned from getting any bike or outdoor related prezzies, but did get a personalised training diary. Stollen cake was good and hand made ( by my wife) felt slippers are great, but dried insects.... mmm I'm not rushing to munch lol! Hoping to get some decent touring wheels in the new year. All ...

Re: Ditching the stuff sack.

I have the klymit static v and really like it. Had an ultralight multimat before but i found i wiggled off it and it became porous after a while. Only issue with the klymit static v is no insulation, though they do do an insulated version, I've managed ok on the standard. The shaping of the pockets ...

Re: Tents, Tarps and Bivi's the pros and cons

I have the helium 200 too and really like it. A tough little tent thats also very light and compact to carry. Actually little weight difference between the bivy and tarp i have compared to the tent, but my bivy and tarps are not super light. The benefit of the helium is you can use it as a tarp tent...

Re: Flat pedal users - A question

I've got salamon fell raisers, totally un waterproof but dry out quickly and great for hike a bike. I wear them with a pair of thick smart wool socks and if camping have a pair of the same socks for dry camp/sleeping bag socks.

Re: Who wants to bivvy in Ardnamurchan... for a year

Saw it advertised some time ago through a bushcraft forum. Could be interesting, or not, but they've gone through the proper processes so local users /interest groups can't have had much issue with the area of use. BTW I'm an outdoor access officer and have been a PROW officer in England. I think th...

One from last night on a little walk up Ronas Hill in Shetland. Cold, still and pretty lovely out. Decided not to bivy so I could have some energy for a ride today.

Re: Best Bikes anyone?

Same here, 1 road bike, 1 off road, so both get used depending on what I'm doing. I am looking to get a second set of touring wheels for my road bike though as my current ones are only 20 spoke and I'm no lightweight especially if I add gear.
