Re: New to bike packing

Jam Bo, what size Gourdon do you have? I was thinking of the Gourdon 30 or the Fixe. Not just for bikepacking, but for work and other stuff.

Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

The Jaran 3 from Alpkit has arrived and we've put it up in the house. It seems a little smaller than I thought, but still big enough for 3 full kip mats with some space in the vestibule area for boots, stove, food. There's a lot of plastic clips on it that I think will warrant being very careful wit...

Re: Recommend me a digital camera.

Another xperia user here. I've been taking my DSLR out less and less unless it's for a photo specific trip as the phone is pretty good for internet use and I can do some pretty good manual panoramas stitched on the PC with Microsoft image composite editor (MICE) which is free.

Re: Winter bivvy mat

Do you usually carry some sort of an emergency blanket? I usually have a sol escape bivy with me that I've just put my blow up zero r rated mat inside ( klymit static v). I've also just put a zip in the sol escape so I can have it pretty much wrapped around my summer bag without condensation issues ...

Re: Bivi Bags- what are we using?

What's up with the hunka? I was thinking of getting the xl. My bivy is a pro force hawk bivy. Not light (950g)but has a zip in bug screen and full hood and is tough breathable fabric. No real space for gear inside it but enough for a full kip mat and I take up a fair bit of space. Would I recommend ...

Re: Family trail near Groeslon, North Wales?

Cheers for all those ideas. The Anglesey options look good and in my head may be a bit more family friendly , but the idea of the Beddgelert /Bethesda area appeals to me more. We'll obviously be driving down from Shetland with the bikes so within reason can start where ever is most appropriate. Quit...

Re: Family trail near Groeslon, North Wales?

I know the national park area of North Wales somewhat from past climbing and walking exploits but not the sort of cycling that theyd be up to. I'll check out those areas and Beddgelert. Anglesey looks like it might be promising. Went skinny dipping at Newborough Warren 25 years ago lol! And spent a ...

Oops, Yeh I think we are! Sorry

Obviously not thinking straight. Just got in from a ride and my wife told me and she said mid Wales so just took it she was right. As she usually is, apparently lol!

Family trail near Groeslon, North Wales?

Seems I will be seeing Wales this year! My father in law has just moved to Groeslon in Mid Wales and it looks like we will be making the long trek sooth to visit him via a few days on the edge of the North York Moors where I'm from. Any ideas for a family friendly bikepacking route reasonably near t...

Re: DD Hammocks/Tarps??

I've a DD 3m and a smaller DD tarp, good for bushcraft but not particularly light.

I have their standard hammock too but I've never used it in anger, seems a bit small for me at 6' amd broad. Good hang out space in family camps and my son has slept in it, but he's only 8!

I'm confused too. Sound like both 1200hh but floor is PU coated too. Wouldn't PU coated be 100% waterproof? See below... Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

Here's what he said... The 1200mm is correct - With all siliconised fabrics the hh test is not the best... I will try to explain, but we will be putting a much more comprehensive article on the Alpkit site next week. Silicon fabric can have a much better DWR coating, that will last a lot longer and ...

Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

Jay? from alpkit was questioned on this somewhere I saw and reckoned the HH test wasn't so relevant due to the mechanics of silnylon when under the HH test, but it comes with a foot print if needs be.

Time will tell, but it's a good price and weight even with a footprint.

Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

Bitten the bullet and ordered the Jaran 3 from alpkit as the golite Wolf Creek L3 that it is rebranded from got good reviews. Very light for size and a good price. Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

Yeh had been looking at the various mids on there , good weight and my wife likes the idea of them for head space too. I've possibly got a suitable pole already, though not lightweight like Stu's, just a bell tent pole. She had a bad experience in a small two man tent with me where she was basically...

Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

You'd get two two man tents and save a kg straight off. Having junior in another tent has plus points... Yeh I agree especially as I have my newly made trailstar plus another lightweight tent. Unfortunately, my wife doesn't want our son in his own tent for some paranoid reason I don't share. It's a...

Re: Light weight 3 man tent?

Cheers, a possibility though I've become wary of simple tunnel tents with wind, possibly unwarranted as times have moved on and there's plenty of higher priced tunnels. Certainly a the saving of 2kg and cheap price would be welcome :-bd I see there is a hoolie etc 3 which is a bit heavier but much b...

Light weight 3 man tent?

Not exactly bikepacking but has anyone got any recommendations on a reasonably priced 3 man 3 season tent that actually fits 3 people?
