Really interesting article, I'm not sure about necking olive oil though.spectraken wrote:Here's a link to an article by Andy Kirkpatrick, he's pretty experienced at sleeping in cold temperatures

Navigating
Hi folks, Quick question, when it comes to off road routes and trails, what kind of maps or navigation tools do you use? I've got a landranger map of my local area which shows a few foot paths and bridleways. Is it more down to local knowledge etc? How did you lot plan routes for WRT? I've got a pho...

Re: Was I a bit harsh?
To be fair, as a newbie, I'd like to admit that I have no idea what kind of MTB I have. The bloke in the shop just referred to it as a general purpose mountain bike, I wouldn't know if it's a DH bike, an XC bike, an enduro... Wouldn't have a clue... It's a KTM Ultrafire 27.5 btw, so if anyone would...

Re: Was I a bit harsh?
Big as in, in mainstream cycling replacing Wiggo-aspiring mamils? I doubt it, but there's certainly signs of more interest / demand for touring bikes of the non-trad Galaxy type. I'm sure there is ... but how many DH bikes were sold to people who'd never seen a DH track? How many folk are riding 'E...

Some of those landscapes look utterly incredible! The company I work for has an office in Vancouver and I keep getting asked to head over for a few weeks. If only I could convince them to pay for my bike being shipped over too...

Re: Was I a bit harsh?
Must admit I've never really thought about the difference between bikepacking and touring. It's probably a mispreconception but I'd think cycle camping is about getting away from it all, being independent and doing things 'light' (ish). Where as the term touring makes me think of people going on 'ho...

Re: Was I a bit harsh?
Although I may be completely wrong. No, not wrong at all ... although the caption 'a bikepacking bike looks like this' alongside a picture of a road bike, probably is. Yeah, I did think that the picture probably wasn't representative of the "typical" bike packing bike, but more a s...

Re: Was I a bit harsh?
As a complete newbie, I'd appreciate articles to be researched and written properly, so I think a response outlining any short comings is definitely a good idea, however, I am one of the few people looking into bike packing on a road bike. So, although it may not be anywhere near as "off road&q...

Re: Sleeping cold
Wow, loads of good advice, thanks so much guys. Lots to try before dropping cash on a warmer bag. I do move around alot at night so I will also try to limit that and move inside the bag as per Ray's suggestion. For the same reason a quilt may well be a sensible purchase. I was in that area last sum...

Re: WRT info
I know I've got plenty of time to prep and train etc, I was just curious as to what to expect. Prep, maybe. Train, no. From my lofty position I was fortunate enough to see just about every returning rider this year and was able to speak to many ... although I apologise if I didn't catch you (but yo...

WRT info
Hi, up until a couple of days ago I had no idea what the WRT was, since then I've read the info page http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/WelshRideThing/ and plenty of posts on here. I "think" I'd be very interested in joining the 2016 event, but I was wondering, does anyone have any strava r...

Re: Sleeping bag upgrade
I'd like to see a lamina 35 in person, to get a handle on how it compares to my vango when compressed. On psoer it seems to tick all the boxes, and I'll have some cash left to grab a decent compression / dry bag for it.

Re: Sleeping bag upgrade
It seems the alpkit bags are either all out of stock, mega expensive or the pipedream 300 which is 1-2 season or a winter liner bag according to the blurb. Am I looking at the wrong thing ?

Re: Sleeping bag upgrade
I have had a Cumulus 350 down bag for a good few years. Super light and packs down really small. Down is great, unless it gets wet of course. The Cumulus stuff seems good value for money. Good quality down. I used mine to tour Europe for a few months, bikepacking trips etc. Still going strong and n...

Re: Sleeping bag upgrade
The Venom bags aren't fantastic value for money given the spec (unless you can find a heavily discounted one). This would be a very good buy and would see you through the entire year. http://www.climbers-shop.com/10023547/products/rab-ascent-700-down-sleeping-bag.aspx Hi thanks for the info, I'd fo...

Sleeping bag upgrade
I'm toying with upgrading my sleeping bag. I don't really know much about expensive bags, so could anyone give me some advice ? I'm looking for a 3 season bag, that packs small and light, for under £200. Any recommendations? The Vango Venoms look like quite good value, are they? Also has anyone used...

Re: Newbie Kit List
I know this might be like asking how long is a piece of string, but if a bag is rated to 12*c as is Is that a comfort rating, lower comfort rating / transition rating? If it's a comfort rating, then outside of the 2 weeks of proper summer we're likely to see, I'd say that even with a liner you'll b...

Re: Newbie Kit List
With all this in mind, I'm going to have a re-think about the sleeping bag. Maybe consider taking the cheap sh**ty Tesco bag and combining it with a thermal liner / thermal base layer. Reckon that would still come in lighter and smaller than the Vango. I know this might be like asking how long is a ...

Re: Newbie Kit List
I've though of this, but unfortunately the cable routing up front means fitting a dry bag to the bars will be a nightmare, I'll post a pic later to explain. How do you orient the dry bag to fit it to the seat post? Like this : http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q230/rabthecrab/bikepacking/IMG_1042....

Re: Newbie Kit List
I've just done some quick calcs, based on Cost, Weight, Max storage capacity. My rack and bags = £30, 2,500g, 30l Therefore cost per litre, and weight per litre= £/litre = £1/litre g/litre = 312g/litre Which is obviously, cheap, but heavy. The Wildcat Gear Tiger = £75, 190g, 8l Therefore cost per l...
