Re: WTD: Bike luggage and pretty much everything else.

The Altura Vortex pack is a similar price to the KTM but is getting naff reviews. Anyone here used the KTM to provide a reliable review?

Re: Light, but not on bars?

I've had similar problem on MTB, need to keep the bag high on the bars in order to allow suspension fork travel. I used some cheap cut-down tri-bars and a bodge (similar to the skewer mount) at the end of one of the tri-bars to mount the light (sorry, no pictures here though). I'd thought about som...

Light, but not on bars?

Hey all, I'm not sure if this should be an MYOG request, or whether I should post it here. Either way, I'm sure some of you folks have had issues with handler bar bags obscuring lights and thus requiring some bodge to get the light on the road. I'm having similar issues, I use a Blackburn outpost ha...

Is the AlpKit bag still available? And does it include the velcro strips?

Shorts? Pants? Trousers?

Hi (and belated Happy New Year).

What do you guys wear from the waist down? For bike packing trips I mean. Proper Lycra "cycling shorts"? MTB Baggies? Something else?

Re: Winter Project - Monstercross

You need a frame with a short TT and long headtube ideally. An early 90's hardtail frame would be a good starting point, most modern stuff is too long, low and results in a less than ideal position. Cheers Stu, did early 90's hardtails come in any other wheel size than 26"? I used to have a Sa...

Winter Project - Monstercross

Hi, I'm planning to build up a bike over the winter. Think Monstercross, think poor mans Genesis Vagabond / Kona Sutra etc. I'm considering sticking with 27.5" wheels as I have bits and bobs lying around that might be reusable, but not 100% on this yet. I was just wondering if anyone had any hi...

Re: UK Bikepacking Book

Sorry to ressurect an old thread here, but does anyone have any pointers on decent books or magazines focused on bikepacking? I've taken a look at the Bikepacking book from the first post and to be honest, it's very much skimming the surface as opposed to really getting in to the subject. Last month...

Personally I think Lauf forks look gorgeous, and I can't stand the look of those single strut lefty forks. Maybe I'm weird.

The bike is a KTM Ultrafire 27.5. I've not bought the wheels yet, here is the thread from yesterday where Pyro gave me a lot of very useful advice and information: http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/phpBB ... f=7&t=8398

Re: Mountain bike semi slick

Cheers guys. Out of curiosity, is there anything wrong with the Schwalbe Hurricanes? The mondials do look to fit the bill, but they seem quite heavy and are £35-£45 according to a quick google search. Must admit, I do like the look of the Furious Fred, but trying to get hold of them is near impossib...

Re: Mountain bike semi slick

As far as width goes, I'm not 100% sure, my bike is currently running a 2.34" inch Nobby Nic up front and a 2.35" Rock Razor at the back, I quite like them, so anything between 2-2.35 would be about right I guess. Again these tyres are only for commuting and pootling about with the family ...

Mountain bike semi slick

I've decided to grab a second set of wheels for my bike so I have a set for off-road bikepacking fun, and a set dedicated to commuting, day trips with the family etc. (another post on this forum somewhere) Does anyone have any recommendations on 27.5 tyres that would be suitable for let's say 80% ta...

Re: Wheels, hub sizes etc...

Yeah, Centerlock is the way the rotors attach - a toothed fitting and a lockring as opposed to the 6-bolt fitting other wheels have. Freehub is already there on the wheelset, so it would be the wheels, adapter, rotors, cassette and a second quick release if you don't have one. If you go that way, I...

Re: Wheels, hub sizes etc...

Essentially, anything that's 27.5" (or 650b to use the road terminology) and QR axled will work. Were I looking at spending your money, I'd use the stock wheels on the bike as my commute wheels, and buy a nice reduced set of Shimano XT one for 'best'/MTB use - they're reduced significantly at ...
