Re: Rims for a Rooster?

I'm running the 29+ 50mm Sun Mulefut 50SLs (655g) on my Stache, which go tubeless with Chupacabras really easily. I reckon they'd be a good bet. From the 29+ rim list on MTBR. Stan Hugo 52.3mm 49.9mm 700g Surly Rabbit Hole 50.0mm 44.5mm 699g WTB Scraper 50.0mm 45.0mm 712g Velocity Dually 45.0mm 39.0...

Re: E-Bike Threat

Will you still think they're OK when battery and motor technology improves and they are fitted with 500w motors? What about 1kw motors? Or software hacks to disable the speed limiter? The guy with the 2KW BSO in Leeds is using a framebag and a saddle pack. If the bike weren't a Wilco special, he'd ...

Re: E-Bike Threat

I'm quite tempted to get some MSc students to do a systematic review of the effects of ebikes on health, utilisation and commuting mode share. A quick search suggests that trial participants do use cars less. https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-0/p206x206/992777_1010058537354389...

Ballpark, loaded, 13F, 14R, unloaded 11.5F, 12.5R, give or take .5PSI. That's on 50mm mulefuts and chupacabras, run tubeless.

Not that I play about with pressures incessantly.

Re: BB200 Fast'n'light or Pack for a kip'n'brew?

I haven't got light kit - will be on 29+, with 3 season bag, mat and bivvy. Don't plan to sleep, but if opportunity for a cafe stop for some decent food presented itself, I'd struggle to pass it up, as I find bars hard to tolerate over long periods. I'm thinking I'll treat it like an straight throug...

Re: First Aid

I have one of those Deuter dry bags that has a first aid bag inside. I got one of the empty ones as I have access to supplies at work. If you have Jones bars and are running a drybag below, it locks beautifully around the straps and sits in the loop just lovely. Medium sterile dressing x 2 Eye patch...

Re: Spare tyre on longer trips?

I have done on long audaxes - my tyre went from fine to dead on LEL2013 - but my road tyres weigh <200g. My 29+ tyres are nearer 1kg. My contingency plan currently is to a tube in and patch up with gorilla tape and hope for the best.

Re: isle of skye bothies please

I mind yonks ago (were talking 30 plus years) the guy who ran my school mountaineering club had 'the bothy book' - a spiral bound banda (remember them??) copied book listing every bothy in the UK - just a brief one line description and a 6 fig GR. Apparently some guy researched and compiled the lis...

I ordered a Terrex Skyclimb after reading this, as they were only £45 at Blacks.

Fit on me is awful - I'm 189cm and 72kg, Large is too large in every way possible. It's vast. I think even medium would be too big. Fit is like a football coaching jacking. It's on it's way back.

Re: Why rigid?

Why do you need a Boost hub in rigid forks? Outside the marketing bumph of boost being better coz it's stiffer, more efficient and cooler etc. I would want all my forks to run to the same standards so I can swap around sets of wheels easily. Yes, this. My Stache came with boost wheels, so want fork...

Re: If you could only choose one

If we were talking purely fun / riding pleasure / owner enjoyment then I could 'probably' do this if I could have one road bike and one mtb. I think I would find road harder than MTB. I could live with my Stache for everything I do, but I think I'd "need" a summer (carbon, <8kg) and winte...

Re: Why rigid?

Having gotten back from riding the Peak 200 route with a 4cm vertical score down the front of my 3 month old Manitou Magnum Pros, I'd go rigid for the reliability. Still, I finished feeling really fresh, with no aches, whereas my mate Tom was sore on his under-maintained Rebas (the seal came out ear...

In case it's useful to others too:

http://www.aukadia.net/gps

The focus is on audax, so lots on following a route. However, the the belt and braces approach (direct routing route with coded wayponts, overlaying a track) is potentially useful for anyone looking to make a idiot proof gpx file,

Winter shoes - not boots

I'm sick of feeling like I've got ankle weights on when wearing my Shimano winter boots. Happily, the neoprene sock tore away from the tongue as I removed them this weekend. After 5 years service, I feel like I have done my time and can't face repairing them. Recommendation for a winter SPD shoe tha...

Re: Peak 200 ITT. Anyone got a strava link?

Yes, from audaxing, I realise it's the devil's own job making a gpx file that every device is happy with, but still provides a error-proof track. Fortunately, my mate does lots of fell running in the area, whereas I've only done a BHF thing there (that seemed to be comprised of most of the big desce...

Re: Peak 200 ITT. Anyone got a strava link?

Where there were discrepancies, it looked like the route had been filtered, but there were times when you could see from the shape of the trail where you were meant to head - ie it looked like it had been mapped on something other than OSM (which both of us were using). That's what it felt like - a ...

Re: Peak 200 ITT. Anyone got a strava link?

I rode the route from SSUK yesterday / last night. I fixed it by importing it in to GPX editor and converting to track.

Beware, some of the track is way off of what is on the ground - eg there's a section at the Monsal trail where you get directed up a cliff.

What sort? I just had ultrasound and they found two epigastric hernia. I have an appt with a consultant in the next two weeks, but all my medic mates reckon I should leave them alone. Six weeks off the bike sounds horrific. I've just got 3mm and 5mm lumps of trapped fat.

Re: One do-it-all bike - too many options?!

It's from the Dorado on the 9, and in my experience, it's iplush, but only once you give up on the recommended settings. People on MTBR seem to be going as far as 20psi below recommended minimum air spring. I'm going 15psi below, and 2 clicks on fast compression, 1, 2 or 3 on slow compression depend...

Re: One do-it-all bike - too many options?!

For what it's worth, my Stache 9 has been relentlessly good fun wherever I've ridden it. The 29+ format has such a large footprint, you can get away with really quite slick tyres and still climb most anything. Jacking up the psi for road sections means the bike is decent for dull transfers. It's not...

Alpkit stoves / canister compaitibility

Am I just unlucky, or doing something wrong? Two Jetboil 230g canisters - one barely worked with a Brukit, never worked with a Kraku, the other didn't work with either. A Coleman 100g worked with the Brukit fine, but didn't get to try with the Kraku. A Go Gas 100g worked intermittently with the Bruk...

Doing the Peak 200 route with Tom W first week of September. He has 2000km of x and 40,000m of y more than me in his legs so far this year. I am anticipating pain.

The Dirt Wizard is about 2.8. I think the Fat B Nimble is about the same if you want a less chunky tread. One of the wheelbuilders on the MTBR forum reckons 35mm is ideal. I'm running 50mm Mulefuts with Chupas (dirt wizards on the shelf for later in the year) - the do look nicely flat sided with 50m...
