You linked to the image rather than embed it. When composing/editing a post if you click on the icon to the left of the chain icon (which is for links to other websites) you get a pair of [ img ] [ /img ] tags, put your image address inbetween those. (I've put spaces in the tags so that the forum so...

Re: Panniers - big, cheap but not terrible
Alpkit do some pannier bags - https://alpkit.com/collections/panniers-and-mountable-drybags Looking at Ortlieb's site it seems that the pannier bags are sold as pairs (well at least some of them) - we've got a couple of sets of these or similar https://www.ortlieb.com/uk_en/back-roller-plus-cr+F5207...

Given it's an absolutely glorious day I thought I'd take the dog up his first proper hill - Penyghent. He absolutely loved it :-bd Went over to Plover Hill which I'd never visited before, most of the boggy bits were still frozen so quite easy. https://www.strava.com/activities/13370342197 Could see ...

Re: Tyvek - any insulation value?
About diddly squit. A search returns: Does Tyvek have an R rating? No, Tyvek house wrap itself does not have an R-value, which is a measure of thermal resistance or insulation. The purpose of a Tyvek house wrap is not to provide insulation, but to act as an air and moisture barrier. It blocks drafts...

Re: A BB200 report
Regardless of whether the old hands think a particular edition is going to be (or was) easy, doing your first BB200 feels quite a big step into the unknown. Well done.
I've done five (plus a BB300) and none have been truly "easy".

Re: Are new GPS units much better than older ones?
So actually what I need is the best method of following an unfamiliar trail on the bike, THAT’S what I’m in need of first and foremost. My main beef with (all) the Garmin units is that the graphics used for the track will clash with something on the map, OS or OSM, and you can't set your own. You c...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
I don't have a ridgeline, but see what you mean about the consistent hang I'd get with it. Whilst I'm a bit blasé about getting the perfect hang etc. I am at least very ruthless in cutting the weight down. The hammock and suspension only weight 233g, though I'm sure adding a ridgeline wouldn't add ...

Reg, not a book but have you seen the Shonky Tours channel on YouTube? Vists a lot of the old N. Wales slate mines.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2025
My guy lines have a spliced loop on one end, this used to be used to attach the guy to the triangle on the tarp. The loop is now at the peg end. The pegs have short loops of line on the tops to assist with pulling them out. If I thread the guy through this loop then thread the peg back through the ...

I use imgur Sean. You can set things up so photos are resized on upload and the site/app gives you ready made links for forums etc. Not sure if there is a limit.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
If you are using the same hammock and underquilt all the time then the best way to get things set up is for you to lie in it and someone to adjust it around you so that there's no gaps at either end. Trying to do it yourself whilst in the hammock is very awkward as you tend not to be in your sleepin...

Re: Mad Cow POSTPONED!
Bright and sunny here but there's no way I'd consider riding a bike on anything but the main roads as there's patchy ice/black ice everywhere. It's that randomness/inconsistency that's the problem.

Re: Fat Fighter 2025 - The Year of the Fat Slob
I follow the same routine each morning: go to loo then weigh myself. Consistency is key but your scales will have an error range - we've digital scales which claim +/- 100g, but some older spring scales could be 1lb out. Short of sticking 100kg of known weight (weight lifting discs or similar) you a...

Re: Are new GPS units much better than older ones?
I've updated my Edge unit twice now but it's been because the existing unit went a bit odd - I was suddenly a 320lb 6yr old!; the unit wouldn't save a ride; etc. Currently got the 530 and it's been fine for a couple of years but still suffers from the problems Phil notes, just the nature of button d...

Re: Damsel in distress!
TBH Shaf we don't have snow tyres on either vehicle, basically we've nowhere to store them when not in use (and obviously storing the summer ones when they are). While they help they aren't a complete panacea if you don't know how to drive in snow. Don't have 4WD either. Usually we park at the top o...

Re: Are new GPS units much better than older ones?
The core GPS/mapping functionality hasn't changed much if at all. Newer units might be able to use Glonass and/or Galileo as well as GPS but that's not required or mandatory to get accurate location data. Much of the extra functionality seems to be things like Bluetooth connectivity, useful if you a...

Damsel in distress!
We've been snowed/iced in for a couple of days - the lane is pretty steep (25% straight from the door) and had 100-150mm of wet snow on it. Got it cleared, with the help of a front-loader, by yesterday afternoon but then it began to freeze and the lane was covered in black ice. Got out just before l...

Chatting to a neighbour yesterday (he's pretty right wing by his own admission) and he was on about people taking early retirement. Was he of the opinion it's a good thing? Or did he wish he had retired sooner? No - he thinks they should still be working. He's about a year older than me and runs hi...

I think most prefer the "doing" to the "managing the doing" - from twenty years in software development in companies up to 400 strong I can think of only one person who preferred documentation to writing code and TBH he was a bit <cough>odd</cough>. Chatting to a neighbour yester...

I'm assuming that's the Andromeda galaxy Greg? If you look SE now there's the crescent moon about 20deg above the horizon, up and left is Venus which is really bright then about the same distance up and left again is Saturn. It's visible to the naked eye but without a telescope you wouldn't know wha...

Best laid plans and all that  Having had a pretty poor year riding wise last year I think I need a target or two to aim for. Actually do some bivvies! I'd quite like to do The Old Chalk Way https://bikepacking.com/routes/old-chalk-way/ - not done much in the south (King Alfred's Way and Cotswo...

Re: Saddle recommendations
I always found the righty tighty thing very ambiguous, for those who need help remembering - what exactly is going to the right? It usually refers to the thing you are trying to move, i.e. the nut. Where it doesn't apply is when there are bearings between the fixed and moving parts because if the m...
