Re: OT question for the over 50's.

I turned 50 last year (worst timing ever!) and I did find myself over the last year, getting back in touch with some friends that I hadn't spoken to for many years due to us moving out of Canada. Mostly just catching up and seeing what was up, nothing really deep or such coming out of it. I have loo...

Re: OT: Murray Walker has left us

Similar to most, he was the voice of F1 in the 80's and 90's when I watched it on TV. In Canada, we were fortunate to get the BBC feed, so I had Murray and James Hunt doing the commentary. I read Murray's autobiography a few years ago and I was surprised at his "real job" prior to getting ...

Re: bespectacled night time off road runners

I'll throw something into the mix- a waist mounted light. We use the Ultra Spire one's and they are great. My wife and I both wear glasses, so I get the point about light and rain. Having in on your waist keeps the light low, so it shows shadows more/allows you to get a better grasp of the terrain, ...

Hi Dave

Brooks Cascadia fan here. Wider toe box than the cross shoes, decent tread. Saucany Perigrine are also wider and have a more agressive tread for wet conditions.

Re: Bikepacking.com: The Complete Guide to Bikepacking Scotland

I always figure Bikebacking.com is a largely US based readership, so yes, more of a guide to folks coming from overseas. The section on language to me seemed very much aimed at an overseas crowd who had never heard anyone speak with a Scottish accent before except on TV.

Re: Does this bar exist?

I went looking at the Bike Packing.com's list of flared drop bars https://bikepacking.com/index/gravel-bars/ and the closest that I could see was the Curve Walmer bar. Surprised that Spank did not go with a 50 cm wide bar. This site lists a 52 cm Spank 25 deg bar https://www.analogcycles.com/product...

Re: Iceland or Norway or...

There is trekking in the Hornstrandir nature reserve north of Isafjordur. You can take a ferry there. We were there a few years back and there were several groups at the campground in Isafjordur who were waiting to take the boat there to trek around. Chatted with one group of British trekkers who we...

Yes, it will be interesting to see just how small it can get. Anyone tried out a hooped vs regular one and have a preference for one or the other? I suppose the pack size is a big issue.

Hi Paul

Thanks for starting this. I had no idea about Alex. Seems like a very interesting fellow and now I can't wait for his Cape Wrath book in 2021!

Re: Favourite bike of 'all time'?

My 1994 Brodie Climax- Lightweight steel tubing, a Ritchey logic curved fork- 1 1/8" threaded. I had it for years. Off road/on road bike. Ended up in the mid 2000's giving it to my Dad to use. He had it for a few years and then when he passed a few years back, we cleaned it up and "lent&qu...

Yes, Sheldon has a great article here about chain line https://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html sadly there is no calculator to tell you what BB = the correct chain line. In my day job, I have to tell folks it is a try and see sort of thing. Try out X size BB. Determine what the chain line is tha...

Re: Who’s brand ‘loyal’ ?

Loyal when it comes to shorts/chamois. Once you find one that fits just right, you don't want to give it up. Shirt/jerseys, not so much. Parts are hit and miss, mostly go off price. General outdoor gear- used to be loyal to Patagonia, but their fit changed and lately I'm more likely to look to Arcte...

I was rather concerned about the apparent lack of handling procedures by the NSW police. Seems someone messed up there. I'll have to do some more digging to see what exactly the issue was.

Re: Stop being soft!

When Killian Jornet beat the Bob Graham round record this past summer, a record that I think had been in place since 1982, it made the top of The Guardian's sports page at least for a day or two. So I think when records are broken like, the media does pay attention. Plus I'm sure Killian's sponsor S...

Re: Interesting article on "Firsts" in Antarctica.

A very well researched article. I think the author did a good job of laying out all the “firsts” and giving good examples of support that more modern expeditions have used. I think the best graphic was the one showing Ousland’s trans Antarctic route vs the one the most recent “race” used. A huge dif...
