Hmm Reg, I would say those figures regarding insurance premiums and claims are a lot of tosh. A quick google says otherwise... https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/politics/20mph-limit-reducing-your-car-29907251 The world of insurance is a bizarre set of non-logical rules applied at random  My b...

Re: Has bike packing (off the beaten track ) gone full circle?

I stayed at a cool little campsite near Worthing once. The shower was on the outside of the toilet 'shed' and there was a sign inside saying not to use the hot tap when someone was showering, you'd know they were in there as the shower curtain didn't reach the ground  My Deschutes was the small...

Dunno about the campsites though. Not all campsites are created equal. Some are vast fields full of hundreds of people and screaming kids, with a clubhouse, chippy, swimming pool and shop. My friend's is a grass clearings in a woodland (one for each pitch) with a composting toilet and a show...

47 inches...Vs 38 in Seattle. The UK has a bit of a rainfall perception problem, most think it's the wettest place on Earth. It is a wet place, but it's probably because it feels more miserable than it is wet. And the south and east of the UK are surprisingly dry too. London is drier than Istanbul....

A rather lovely Enlightened Equipment quilt (from the classified section) and some half price Teravail tyres as mentioned on the Bargain Alert thread.

Re: Has bike packing (off the beaten track ) gone full circle?

I did one of my usual jaunts round the Trossachs yesterday and intercepted the Badger route at a few points - I passed 8 people doing it, but they all seemed suspiciously lightly loaded - could be super TLS I 'spose but probably doing it using digs, I suspect. Which is fine of course, but is it bik...

Re: Head Torch on Helmet - any Experience please?

Joystick is a great helmet light but you will struggle to get a hood over the top. They do make an elastic band thing to use it as a head-torch but it basically just straps it to the side of your head. It has a long battery life but really needs to be plugged into the mains to recharge. I've used th...

No sleeps on the TCR marshaling you can count if you add a bit of rule bending?

My current run started in March 2020 so no need to start at the beginning of a year.

Maybe I should put a saddle pack on my commuter with a frock and some frilly knickers in it, and I'll add a bra for good measure. If (when) a supermarket lorry sends me off to the great ITT in the sky the presence of these will ensure I make the national news, which will help highlight the dangers o...

So...the couple traveling with steel bikes and pannier is made of strong stuff, but the guy with a bikepacking setup is a snowflake for booking a campsite? I think you might be missing the humor (and irony) in Vs post. The guy said he'd never go 'Touring' but thankfully now he can go bikepacking :l...

If jumping onto the 200 from the 300 if things don't go to plan can you still aim for a badge doing the 200 ? One you've set sail then that's it. No badge is you change part way through. I like this. Far be it for me to comment as I've never made the commitment but surely the whole point of BB2/300...

I'd hoped to get away for a more adventurous bivi this month over the bank holiday but family commitments and the fact they forecast rain meant I had to settle for a local school night one. As they're cut resistant will the gorse just poke through between the threads of Kevlar? You probably need needle safe gloves, these are a liner but at £90 you'd have to really want to ride where the gorse is. https://www.safetecdirect.co.uk/products/hex6044/hexarmor-pointguard-x-6044-needle-resista...

Re: Maybe a daft question about tarps/tents and quilts

I use a Borah gear bivi for that purpose. If it's going to be dry I just use that on it's own. Roomy enough for the mat inside and it only weighs 150g ish and is tiny when packed down. It also keeps the bugs off when zipped up. In order to minimise condensation I like the bottom of the tarp off the ...
