Re: Highland Trail 2021

Hi everyone, It's over 4 weeks since the race and I'm still buzzing. I've really enjoyed reading everyones write-ups. It's great to get a picture of what amazing experiences other people had out there. Particularly impressed with Phils dry feet at Fisherfield! That is something I could definitely wo...

Re: Q for parents- finding time to ride

Sorry, didn't mean to make anyone feel bad or sound big headed. I am aware that I'm in a very fortunate position and definitely don't take it for granted. It's taken a while to get here. I've been cycling way less than I would like for at least the past 5 years, so it's a very relevant topic to me a...

Re: Q for parents- finding time to ride

This is a great thread. I've got a 3 year old and just turned 2 year old. And I just finished the HT550 last week... It can be done, but it's not easy. I would say I'm only just getting back to the stage of finding time to train properly. When they were younger than this it just wasn't going to happ...

Re: Decamping

Having only ever done one bikepacking race I think my system would need to change for a longer race or different weather but I definitely did think carefully about being as quick as possible. I would lay down bike, take dry bag off front roll and remove sleeping bag already inside bivy bag. I didn't...

Re: 2016 Highland Trail (group start)

Liam is fairly flying! Is the difference between 5 hours and 2 hours sleep playing a part? Interesting to see. Also interesting to note that Liam was just ahead of Phil Simcocks time at CP8. Phil didn't sleep though so he's fallen behind again. Still very impressive for a 2 hour late start! Looks li...

Re: 2016 Highland Trail (group start)

Just been comparing the old Torridon section against the new one. I reckon the new one is ~ 2.5 hours faster based on Liam's time and mine from last year. Alan's definitely made the route too easy now. I hadn't realised the Torridon section had changed! Is there a reason why? The route they're taki...

Re: Highland Trail 2015

Steve Heading seemed to be enjoying it at Ullapool! Just shows how tough this race can be mentally as well as physically.

Keep going Steve Large! The best bits are yet to come! It will be so very worth it when you get back to Tyndrum.

Tom still looking fresh after refuelling at Tescos in Ullapool. Heading into Fisherfield for the night. Talk of very high winds forcing him to walk on the northern loop! Didn't have that last year.

Re: Highland trail 550!!

Following the tyre tracks was one of the things that I really liked about the ride - its a great comfort to know that some other poor buggers were suffering the same as you! Was interesting checking out peoples lines round the wet bits and floods on the Orrin res track and deciding which ones to fo...

Re: How not to ride an Adventure race

It is a tough ride indeed. Well done on making it through, getting to the end is a huge achievement. Not being a fan of fizzy drinks at all, Coke is something I wouldn't touch even during a race. You do need something to bring you back from the bonk though, I had a stash of caffeine shotbloks from t...

Re: How not to ride an Adventure race

Some very good points! There is definitely a lot to be learnt during the ride that can't be learnt by reading about it. A couple of things I don't quite agree on: Food. 4 days is probably overkill but at all points in the race I was carrying as much food as I could. It often turned out to last a lot...

Re: Highland trail 550!!

Closer to Poolewe there will most probably be some boggy bits and formidable puddles. The very last one being a cow dung bog. I bivied just before the cow dung bog, it did not make for a pleasant early morning ride! Looks like Iona has made it to Poolewe now though, Tollie Path next (not fun) then ...
