Re: Hydration - how much liquid do you consume on a ride?
In the summer months I try to go with 0.5 L per hour. When it's hot and I'm on a long climb, it's likely 0.5 - 1 L per hour. I mostly fail at drinking enough though... For more intense but shorter rides of 2 - 5 h in summer, 1.5 L is enough that I don't have to bother about water en route, but again...

Re: Dynamo setup cost
600 is ok if its consistent, 500mah is/was USB output standard afaik. My USB-Werk has that output and charges everything ok, it does have an inline battery in it though to smooth the output. Iphones can be more fussy but my Samsung's no prob. Yeah, I too think it's 500 ma as a minimum. I use the so...

Re: Hello
Hi, I am new here and currently planning my first trip this year. I have no experience of touring or bike packing so it will be a great adventure I'm sure!I am planning to do my first trip to Germany, currently my only problem is where do you store a bike bag for a few days? I'm flying into Cologne...

Read maps on the loo? Dotted line sickness? Yes and yes. 103 1:25000 Swisstopo maps. Plus a bunch of 50k and other random stuff including a shelf filled with various guide books and some alpine books which actually don't belong there. https://fstatic1.mtb-news.de/v3/23/2345/2345807-efcnq0nd6l5g-2019...

Please tell us old gits what we can do to help you out and not cause future problems for the mountain rescue teams? I'm sure you remember the tragedy behind Arolla? The guide was an old git. He rejected the use of GPS and/or sat comm. 7 dead. As we know now the drama could have been avoided. It goe...

Re: Carbon rims for bikepacking
All my trail bikes, short travel, long travel, hardtail and also my fatbike (snow use only) have carbon rims and I do bikepacking with them. I mostly ride in the Alps and prefer steep and rocky single tracks more than anything else and like to let the bikes go on the descents. Also, I disliked the s...

Movement.
If I loose sensation I get of the bike and walk it. After 10 min or so my feet are alive again and I can keep on riding.
Works best with not so stiff shoes/boots.

Today, Picking up three wheels from the builder. Re: Ti bolts: part 2
I've been using ti bolts for discs for years and also on some stems and for racks. Especially on my everyday bike since they use a sh*t load of salts where I live. I use a little loctite and have never had any problems, except for bolts from Superstar compontents, their disc bolts (hex) being even t...

Re: What makes an Adventure
Blogging to some may be more of an adventure then a cycling trip of some sorts.
To me it would anyways.
It's more of an unknown to some then packing the bike and going on a trip into the wild for a few weeks.
I'm sure that's what she meant.

I'm 182 cm (just shy of 6 ft) and use a SMD Deschutes shelter for solo hiking trips and have modified it a little with additional tie outs but also without it's a very likeable piece of gear. Large enough for 3 season use, a bit too short for a winter bag, thicker mat and a little snow load on it. I...

Loctite user here too. Have been using ti bolts especially on rotors for as long as I can think and never ever had an issue with them. Only with Superstar bolts I had problems with softness and small hex heads. I think they offer a different type now. New disc rotors came with Ali bolts... I've inst...

It isn't if the tyre has some width around 60 mm - 2.4". I ride various tyres from 2.35 - 2.6" in 30 mm rims and find they're a perfect match.lune ranger wrote:doesn't make an internal 30mm rim seem wide for an MTB anymore

Re: Fargo's a go-go
With narrow tyres on wide rims you sacrifice the shoulder knobs, leaving you with weak performance when cornering or when riding off camber stuff. Even on tarmac you'll loose a noticeable amount of grip. For a mate and self it once ended with three decent crashes during the same trip. The transition...

I'm not doubting your Surly was poor on the QC side, to be clear. Every factory turns out Friday afternoon jobs I don't think I misunderstood you. I like to think and hope (too) we just got a bad batch or so. But considering how the racks were fabricated I'm less convinced the frames were a one off...

I still don't see £750-900 as poor value in the longer term for a steel frame set that does what you want it to do Waltly will make you a completely customised ti frame and fork for that money. Including triple cage bosses, internal routing, sliding dropouts, special sizes (fatbilke) etc. I believe...

Every steel frame can be flexed. My girlfriend and I run boost hubs on the Krampus and there's no issue. Well there was one; all four sliding drop outs were a mess with too thick a paint job and even droplets. The original axle wouldn't fit! We bought racks to go with the Krampus as we mostly use th...

Re: Recommended brakes
Besides being toxic and hygroscopic, thus asking for more care when bleeding and also more regular bleeding, DOT 5.1 will still work at -25 °C where mineral oil won't. Mineral oil becomes too viscous to pass through bike brakes freely at temps lower than about -15 °C. From there on you need to take ...

Re: Recommended brakes
All brands have their problems. I think one just needs a bit of luck to be able to run a set of brakes for s few years with only some bleeding each year. Sofar I've been most lucky with Sram brakes. I'd stick with Sram or Shimano. Costs are lower on Shimano, but for some riders smoother feel and mod...

Thanks all for the thoughtful replies. Now I am more confused! A quick look at Cumulus and they are similar to PHD in the sale or perhaps cheaper. Had not heard of As Tucas before but don't look cheap. My summer bag is probably the same WM one as benp1 as it is 0 degree rated. A quilt is not a mass...
