Re: GPS advice Etrex touch

Cheers for the input both, I've gone down the safe route and stuck with what I've already had. It's ok for my needs , it'll be nice to have a bigger screen and touch but I don't fancy the trade off. I generally navigate with the map at around 200-500mtr resolution with talky toaster maps and haven't...

Re: GPS advice Etrex touch

Thanks for the info Lars, Using it with gloves was one of the thing that I wondered about. I always wear gloves when biking so if the touch UI doesn't work with gloves then it would be a nightmare to use. I'm guessing that it would be like the iPhone then and even harder to use when it's got a bit o...

GPS advice Etrex touch

Hi all, I've managed to smash up my GPS after a bit of a tumble. It was the Etrex 20 which I liked, simple to use, takes AA batteries with a good battery life. So I've been looking to replace it and seen the new Etrex's with touch screens. Has anyone got one and what do you think? Thanks in advance,...

Re: 2016 Highland Trail (group start)

wow, this is riveting. There's not going to be much sleep going on with the front runners tonight.
There should be more than one that'll break 4 days at this rate.

The pace at the front coupled with the lack of scratches whose placing bets that it'll be the HT700 next year!

Cheers for that Ian

It's different to the one I had. The one I had felt so convoluted that I never bothered with it.

I'll have to give it a crack.

Re: Cotic Solaris owners

I ❤️ My Solaris Running 1 x 10 at minute with a 32T absolute black oval front ring c/w DT Swiss forks. I do the majority of my riding in the Peak so I'll swap over to a rigid single speed in the winter to save my forks from Peak grit paste. I run flat bars with a Thompson laid back post which took m...

Re: Your favourite trail

Thanks Alasdair, I must ride that. I've only just started exploring more Scottish riding, it's a long way for us midlanders but well worth the effort. I was in Blair Athol on Saturday ready to start the CL but forgot to load the route to my GPS. Idiot. Sounds like it was horrendous conditions! Looki...

Your favourite trail

Hi all, I had the great privilege to be able to ride the trail from Dundonnell to Poolewe at the weekend. It was a bit wet and windy but on the descent to Carnmore something happened, I had one of 'those' moments. The track isn't particularly technical, far from it, but as I descended and reached th...

Re: Best front ring for 1x10 set up

Cheers all,

Thanks for your replies, I'm intrigued with the oval ring. I remember the old Bio-pace or should I say my knees remember.
I recall someone had one of the rotor q-rings on the winter bivi and loved it.

It's looking though like any thick/thin chainring will help me with the chain drop.

Best front ring for 1x10 set up

Hi All,

I had a few chain drops in my last set up, Middleburn Uno and Sram X7, I'm going to give the Shadow plus a try but does anyone recommend a front ring?
I understand the thick/thin is better for 1x10 set ups but has anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 2017 Big Trip to where?

It sounds like you had a proper trip planned there Richard! Any trip that neck of the woods is going to be big bucks for logistics I reckon. Iceland in comparison will be cheap and easy to get to, no need to wait till 2017 for a trip there. I'm guessing you were after a bigger challenge. I visited T...

Re: 2017 - Expedition bikepacking trip - Do you fancy that?

Oh, it's like a good game of guess who! looking at the spot coverage map, it's either way north (Svalbard, northern Greenland etc) or way south, tip of Patagonia, southern Africa or Madagascar. I'll discount north because of Polar bears (shot guns etc), and I'm going to guess at Patagonia because of...

Re: Todays ride

Nursing a massive hangover after the New Year festivities the weather outside was unappealing to say the least. There was a break in group apathy which resulted in a stonking ride around Whinlatter. Well worth the effort

It was a bit wet though, a great hangover cure.... lol

Chapeau!

I got p*ss wet through on a hangover ride around Whinlatter yesterday, the thought of doing 200+ miles makes me shudder.

She wasn't quite smiling as we rolled up to the van at midnight! you're right though, she's always smiling and a lot tougher than me in some ways.

Man of Porage, did you ride with Zoe the other year in Yorkshire? She was beaming that day and that was not far off a 17 hour day.

Re: HT550 Northern Loop - The Video

With hind sight she probably would have taken a pair but we didn't envisage 3+ hours of hike-a-bike.
I wear 44's to her 37's so walking in a right 44 on her left foot would have been fun!

Re: HT550 Northern Loop - The Video

Yes, Zoe packed one of my shoes by mistake and we didn't realise until the start. There's no way I would have coped in her shoes (pardon the pun). If you noticed in the video she had a left fell shoe strapped to her rucsack which she used for the hike-a-bike. It was a great day, the weather helped (...
