WTD: Ritchey Kyote bars or similar

Just had the cracked chainstay on my Mk1 Stooge mended and it’s made me think it might also be a good idea to replace the 10-year-old On-One OG bars. I like them but have always thought a bit more width would be welcome. Anyone got anything suitable before I buy new?

Re: What are you listening to now?

Oh, and this programme (How to play Schubert’s Death and the Maiden) was on in the car as I was driving home the other day. I’m not a classical music buff but this fascinating. It’s a really dramatic, evocative piece of music and the whole programme was a good listen. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/pl...

I loved the Cardiacs. Saw them a few times and they were a proper spectacle.

Re: Sleeper Train Question

As said above, there’s an apartheid system for seated and cabin passengers and staff can be quite sniffy about it. People do stretch out on the floor in the seated carriages when the train’s not busy. I always just make do with a seat since the old “bargain berths” disappeared. It’s possible to get ...

Re: Not getting out there, wasting time (and my life) instead

It can really help to put something (small, not daunting, in the diary on a regular basis. Bivy a month works a bit like this. Once you’ve done it once, the second time is easier and so on. Conversely, the longer you go without getting out, the harder it is to make that first step. Also, making join...

Re: Thunderstorms

Yikes! I got caught in a storm while crossing the flanks of Cadair Idris a few weeks back. It was close enough at one point that I dumped the bike and adopted the position. Probably about as much good as praying, I imagine, but it made me feel slightly better.

I’ve used an Alpkit down quilt for this. Not perfect but fine for summer and packs down small.

Re: Caledonian Sleeper

I’ve done it a few times. My top tip is to have something to use as a pillow between your head and the window. A quilt or down jacket helps with the illusion that you’re in bed. I never get a great night’s sleep but enough to make it bearable. Cabins are so expensive now that I’m never going to affo...

I’ve had this but nothing worth fretting about. Unlike when I left a corner of my polycro groundsheet poking out, created a river into my quilt and woke up in a small lake

Re: More abandoned places.

We stayed in a holiday cottage on the Dunalastair estate a couple of years ago. It was actually the old laundry for the now derelict house and about 200 yards away from it. You can wander up to the house but it’s all boarded up and not easy to get into. It seemed amazing to me that no one had found ...

Great tale that, James. Thanks for sharing it. I’m bookmarking it for use in planning something similar for a bit later this year. :-bd

Mine’s done exactly the same thing. Don’t seem to be many Outdry jackets about anymore and the current model seems to have no pit zips.

Re: 2022 Photo Comp'.

I like this juxtaposition of warm comfortable hotel bed and distinctly damp bicycle. This was taken in May on a 10-day trip from Glasgow to Aviemore via the Lomond-Trossachs Loop that went marvellously wrong. This was the first of a couple of night spent inside to dry out kit and boost my morale. :o...

Re: Outdry delamination

Mine’s delaminating quite badly on the back of the hood. Not been washed, left wet, sweated on or toasted. It has been rolled up now and then. Still seems remarkably waterproof. I’m sticking with it for now and will buy another to replace it when it eventually dies.

Thanks for the replies. How much would you want for the cranks and do they use standard chainring bolts? (I googled those XT ones and they look like they don’t). Any pics?

WTD: Hollowtech II cranks

The splines have finally gone on the 17-year-old Shimano XT cranks on my SS. Has anyone got some standard Hollowtech cranks they’re looking to sell?

Edit: needs to be 104bcd for my On-One SS ring

Re: Etrex Stem Mount

Interested in that Amazon kit. My DIY effort, (v similar to Javatime’s) has worked well but now, after a good few hundred bumpy miles, the female stem-top bracket has failed. It may be down to a poor quality bracket but I’ve always thought the extra height of my DIY gizmo was likely to increase leve...

I’ve also got a Gondola and it’s excellent. No sway, and it’s easy to attach and fill.

Stick it in a dry bag, kneel on it with the opening open then fold the dry bag coded while still kneeling on it. That’s as small as it will go.

Re: King Alfreds Way.

Agree with all the above. Bits of it wouldn’t be much fun on any bike after a period of wet weather. Certainly doable on a tourer or gravel bike but it’s not what I’d choose. I did it over three days on a rigid 29+ and that seemed about right. Very enjoyable route, bar the bit through and just south...
