Re: On-One Fatty Chassis Kit - anyone tempted?

To me the fat bike is the bike I can't quite justify, I was out in the woods the other week riding and came across a guy on a on one fat bike, reality was it was slow, there was no way he'd keep up with the Spearfish. So people say oh but you can ride them where bikes can't go, as far as I can see,...

Re: GPS Again

Basecamp seems to work really well. It'll access the maps on the Dakota when it's connected, so you get 1:50k if that's what you've bought. I like not having to plug the Dakota in every time I want to use it so I bought a little USB stick, copied the map file onto that and Basecamp reads it just fin...

I'm still loving my fatbike. Perfect for bivi rides.

I have a decathlon strap-on mount and a Topeak cage mounted on the forks of my El Mariachi. It's been able to carry 500ml of fluid without moving.

Re the power options... I hadn't tried it before but I've just managed to get my Dakota 20 running direct off the Power Monkey unit (i.e. no AA's installed). That being the case, it should also work off a dynamo power feed :) The one "flaw" I've found so far is that the screen doesn't go i...

Re: Another rafting trip. Spey descent

The packrafts are a lot more stable than you'd think. There are lots of videos on YouTube of folk doing some pretty extreme rapids with them. Compared to kayaks, I'd say the following.. They are less "directional. That means harder to paddle in a straight line but much more maneuverable. That m...

Spoons are fabulous value so easy to try and not a great loss if you decide to sell on. The Flux and the Gusset R-Series are based on the same shell. I also love the Phenom (in a 143). I've a Brooks B17 on my tourer. It didn't need any running in and us super for very long days sitting down pedallin...

Re: Solo bivi rides

I need time to myself and multi day solo bike packing trips are the way I enjoy it most. Go where you want, when you want, at the pace you want, stop where you want and have no one to rely on but yourself. Sometimes things go wrong but real horror stories, no. You should try it, it's great. All of ...

No way the Siltarp 1 would cover you completely. I'm happy with mine and a Rab Ascent bivvy bag though.

They look great but I've heard that they're not very robust and the sole isn't really ideal for proper hikey-bikey stuff (though good in the water).

Add "quick draining" to that list and I ended up taking a 10mm drill to an old pair of Salomon hiking boots :D Perfect for packrafting!

Re: What mags do you read?

None. With the availability of decent stuff on t'internet I tend to stick to that. Blogs mostly as I prefer hearing real users experiences. Forums (like this one, STW, Trail Scotland) and the occasional online mag like Scottish Walking/Scottish Cycling for some route ideas is about it.

Re: Have you ridden these?

Dere Street is still open to motorised vehicles (in places at least). To me, that means it should be an obvious track though after bad weather it can be a bit churned up. I passed a section of it just north of the border last autumn and it all looked great around there.

Not a 29er but my Blur XC is a medium and I'm 5'7". If it was any smaller, I'd be hitting my knees off the bars. AFAIK, Santa Cruz are usually a bit short in the top tube.

My GPS claims I covered 454 miles so if anyone knows how to overlay 2 gps routes I'd appreciate it. If you open them up with something like Notepad you'll see that they are just XML files in raw text. You can take the trailer/header record off and just append the second to the first. If you're havi...

Re: Highland Trail Race - Good Luck

Interesting reading he comments on the hike-a-bike damage. I do a lot of hillwalking and I've never had a problem so I guess that maybe there's just some more specific training required to beef up certain muscles? Overall - I can't get over just how much I've enjoyed following it all. I was also sor...

Re: Fatbike advice please.

The On Ones look to be a good deal but I've seen too many folk report issues with them, particularly the crap brakes and the need for more gears to make best use of the fatbikes abilities. Factor that into the mix, look at the overall weights, and it's hard to see past a Mukluk.

I have a Sweet Roll. It's the larger of the two models that were available last year, so 8" diameter. I really like it. It holds tons of gear and straps onto the bars pretty easily. There are some spacers provided to create clearance for cables and hoses. The one issue I did have is that the fo...
