Re: Irwell Divide

I live in Egerton, and regularly ride off-road from there to Farnworth - 7.6 miles of very interesting and good riding, crossing one or two main roads. It’s down the Eagley Valley, and I have 2 options, one for very dry, and one for normal… And from Farnworth I go 10 miles to Trafford Park (Depot cl...

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

This business of the High Court reaching its decisions seems to me to be highly subjective. As with nearly everything we do and accept is subjective… but some of these judgements….deary deary me… If a judge has no idea what to camp means but understands litter then….deary deary me… The National Park...

Some great comments there, and I echo all of them…

Somebody else here thinks this world is a bit insane, and it’s you Stu who preserve the balance a bit… your sometimes acerbic comments are very appropriate..

Keep up the good work please :-bd :-bd :-bd

Re: HT550 2023

On his way again from the road at Achfary, after a stop of a good 3 hours. I’d thought he had bailed there but no, he’s on again, the climb up to the top at 409 metres.
Sheer grit and determination, good effort Steve :-bd

Wishing him well for the night ahead

Re: HT550 2023

Top of Bealach Horn about 7am
Road at Achfary 2:30pm
It’s about 5 miles and downhill, so over 7 hours for 5 miles means conditions are impossible I would say.

Re: HT550 2023

The long downhill from the Bealach Horn…. Less than 1 mph, and a lot of it at 0.4 mph….. Can only assume it’s deep snow, and if it’s same on the ascent over to Kylescu I can only say it’s just not worth carrying on. It’s skis you need, not a very heavy fatbike…. I wish him well though and perhaps my...

Re: HT550 2023

Agreed Phil ! Trying to work out how long he slept for (rather lay down and stopped, must have a very good sleeping bag). Top of Bealach Horn very slow progress, like 300 feet every 10 minutes, sometimes less. I guess he’s in deep snow. Must be horrendous. Another thing is his food: must be carrying...

Re: Garmin Edges

And the maps on the phone don’t need a mobile signal. They just need the satellites. Hit one button and it pinpoints exactly where you are, and if you start moving you get a long red arrow which tells you which direction you are moving. I even use that when driving in out of the way places eg neares...

Re: Garmin Edges

If I’m following a route on the 530 and I get stuck or need clarification, at that point I’ll get the phone out. It has Memory Map OS maps on. 1:50k and 1:25k for greater detail. So the phone is away in the frame bag.

Re: Garmin Edges

Phil I have the full set of OS maps on, England, Wales, Scotland (not NI though). You just ignore all the training stuff, upload to Connect, Strava etc. It’s no bother. I don’t know anything about Garmin OS Premium. What I did was to buy Memory Map with all the OS maps (been using that years, so use...

Re: Garmin Edges

Hi Phil I’ve had a Garmin Edge 530 probably for two years now, and praise it highly. I’ve put OS maps on, there’s no card, but you plug it into your PC and copy the relevant files across. The battery is superb. The screen is small so I’ll often use my phone for detail. But it is lightweight, 78g if ...

Re: selling all and getting a cheating bike.

Ton, remember it’s the spirit that counts, not the mechanics nor the fitness nor anything else. If you have the motivation that’s a really big big thing, and it doesn’t come from nowhere. I’m getting on a bit now and still riding regularly, and if anyone asked me if I’d get an e-bike I’d tell them t...

Re: North Wales 400

I got quite interested in this route so spent a couple of hours putting it through Memory Map. Of the 250 miles there are 137 on the road - that’s 55% road. Of those 137 miles 7 are on A roads, 21 on B roads, and the rest on minor roads. So 20.4% of the 137 road miles are on A or B roads. Longest ro...

Re: North Wales 400

Looks very interesting and visits some good country…. But there seems to be a lot of road in it, and some of that not so minor.

When I get chance I’ll run it through Memory Map to try and assess how much road (minor and above)….

If somebody does that before me… :-bd

Interesting point(s) there James… (BTW how to copy someone else’s quotes - I’m on an iPad and it’s very fiddly to use copy and paste) What’s Z2 etc ? “ I don't think a rider's ability to maintain a pace is linked to fitness, more to experience or attitude. Conditioning rather than output fitness. As...

Re: Difficulty of a ride

Yes GPS data uses atmospheric pressure, which varies depending on weather, but overall does give an indication. If I plot a route using Memory Map I think it does it using the contours. I’ll try this sometime: Note the ascent of a ride, or rides (as I do the same course/courses often), then import i...

Difficulty of a ride

Here’s a thing: Studying the figures for the HT550: Even the slower riders are still showing an average moving speed of over 7mph… so if they stopped less… (Alan (not one of the slower riders, at 7.7 mph, Trep at 7.1) But the HT550 is shown as 550 miles and 16000 metres, which is 52480 feet. However...
