Re: Tyre Pump
I've got the Bikehut branded version of this: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/TOPHGM82/phaart_rumbler_large_volume_micro_floor_pump Does the job ok and won't break the bank. Much prefer it to "direct to valve" pumps. I've also got some stupidly light BBB one that I take out on my road bike. It...

Re: Paper Maps vs GPS
I draw the route on OS Getamap, convert to GPX and read from my Edge 200. I then print off the maps from getamap with the route drawn on onto A4 and laminate them/pop in plastic sleeve. GPS works most of the time but I like to have the "bigger picture" so to speak. UK Map on my iPhone is h...

If you can live with the bottomless design/have a well insulating mat then the Thermarest Haven 20 is available in large (as opposed to 6ft being "regular") iirc. Weighs 600 and a bit gms and packs down well. Used mine on el-an back this weekend. :)

I've got a pair on order from Triton Cycles but I think they said the delivery date was late February, the same as you've been told.

Re: El an Back
Hi FLV! Yeah, that was us modifying our route after having the same experience as you, marked routes didn't always translate to anything approaching a path! We made the mistake of taking the track just off the bridge and not going up the road. It involved a couple of stream crossings & portage o...

Another first timer here, very cold but very enjoyable. Especially when describing it over coffee this morning at work! A few lessons learned about what to take and what not to for when we go again. A big thumbs up to Stu & Dee for organising this and the essential supplies. The Buff was a...

Re: Higher average speed or ride longer?
I can relate. My 90 min XC race pace is only a fraction faster than my 4hr pace which isn't miles off a weekend fun ride. That's a factor of me A) not being much good but also (B) moving beyond "natural" pace brings diminishing returns. Looking at Jay Petervary on his record tour divide he...

I'll be sporting one of these on my head for El-an Back.
Not AAs but comes with a couple of 18650s and only takes one at a time so you'll have a spare. Takes a couple of weeks to arrive but you cant complain for £11

I run Crests on my XC race bike and haven't managed to bend them at Dalby.
I've got another pair to go on my Fargo, that'll be a heavier bike, loaded & no suspension. It'll be an interesting test (well, for me anyway!).

Re: Priced out of mainstream mountain biking?
I see what you mean. Another thing to take into consideration is how much you had to spend BITD. I had a Claud Butler Pagan. Essentially the same as the Raleigh, 501 & 200GS. At that time, 1990ish, the next bike down would've been something like a Raleigh Mustang! Now you don't have to spend tha...

Just by replacing the pole & pegs with something other than steel will lose most of that.Cheeky Monkey wrote:You've got to be cautious about anything that comes in a handled bag. Over 1.5kg and 2foot long, it'd be good training for the Alps

Re: Tubeless
My mate had Crossmarks that he found a nightmare to try and inflate tubelessly. My ignitors went up with no hassles when I used a bit of car shampoo to seal the edge, lube them. I recently bought a tub of the tyre/rim lube On-One are selling. Using that a fresh pair of Nobby Nics on Crests went up w...

Re: Priced out of mainstream mountain biking?
Using the calc again it suggests £350 equates to £630 In today's money. My brother in law has a Raleigh Discovery that cost about £350 in 1991. I promise you that *anything* you bought today, be it niche or mainstream for £600 would ride better than a 501 frame and 200GS! Gairy, I'll agree tha...

Re: Priced out of mainstream mountain biking?
Using an online calculator it seems that £2250 is about £1500 with inflation from 1998 so it's not a million miles away. Pop along to Halfords and a grand gets you a Boardman hardtail with x9 or a full-susser with x7. I bought a Sunn Urge XC Un in 99/00. Full RRP for the team rep bike with xt was £1...

Re: Priced out of mainstream mountain biking?
While you can spend more than is strictly necessary mountain biking has never been cheaper for the performance. Remember Ringlé skewers at £50 a throw or RockShox Mag 20s for £350 with 50mm travel? £1000 buys you an amazing bike, either a cracking hardtail or a well performing full susser. Just do y...
