Interesting because the crossbar stiffens it makes it less comfy while also being too thin for mounting things to? : ) I suppose it'd be useful for stabilising a bar bag strap. And £15 is a good price.

Re: What are you reading now?

While I'm here .. tried to get back into a reading habit with something light last year, Bez's 'Freaky Dancin'' which is great for anyone who was into that music scene back then. Up there with 'How Not to Run a Club' by Peter Hook. Now trying to get through Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow -...

Re: What are you reading now?

I have two copies of 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush' by Eric Newby, after WOB sent me one that was definitely not in "very good" condition. If anyone wants it, then let me know... Hi Boab, I'd love to read that. I have his 'Round Ireland in a Low Gear' and Andrew Harvey's 'Journey in Lad...

Re: Proposed Wind Farm near Glaslyn

Talk of concrete blocks and carbon blades etc.. Thinking back to conversations about bikes and impact where even the highest CO2 cost to produce is offset if it replaces a few hundred miles of car use I wondered how much energy an average wind turbine has to generate to become CO2 neutral Vs coal or...

Re: Bargain Alert Thread

That Salsa sale is an eye-opener - a carbon fork at over £500, reduced from £800+ ?

At what point was £800+ an OK RRP for a carbon fork? As nice as the product is the route to market (margin stack) doesn't seem workable esp not in the current climate.

Access Islands

Thought this was interesting, about how there are areas of land we have access rights to but they're surrounded by private land we don't have rights to. A couple of hilltops locally have public access rights but I wouldn't pass them on a route using the usual ROWs (inc FPs). Google map here - you mi...

^ yeah.. If anyone in a position of influence is serious about changing travel habits they need to look at balancing the costs somehow. Flights aren't exactly reliable either so I'd have flying Vs European trains as similar risk of disruption but the price difference is hard to ignore. I look at it ...

Was sad to read this. He was a such a good guy. I never really got into the 24hr laps thing but had many good weekends riding or working at his events. Doing a few night laps while working on a stand there or being part of an underperforming team, they were MTB festival weekends of the best sort. I ...

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?

So true.. a few trips by ferry or train and you wonder why tagging such a hassle of an experience inc the likelihood of bike loss or damage onto each the end of the trip was so normal.
Compare that to rolling onto a ferry or the European Bike Express coach..

as it's very hard to change your life, particularly when it's something that could things more difficult, when you watch others with far greater impact happily pissing it all up the wall. Agreed. Totally agree it’s down to governments and big corporations to change rather than the little people It's on all of us. (edit to add, saw your post saying you're not saying this is a reason to do nothing) We can make a case for blame-shifting like this but until we vote and spend with these consider...

Unfortunately none does anything for the greater good hence why these projects only happen when monetary incentive is provided.

Scoop's pretty average length I'd say? I have the Scoop Flat on a couple of bikes, it's great, a very flexible base. Std Scoop is more like the Bel Air / Volt shape.

Re: Looong Saddles?

Arione's a great saddle on a road bike. It's quite flat from the side profile Vs the Volt/Bel Air/Spoon s-curve profile. 280~285mm seems to be the average length for a saddle that's not a short-nose design. The On-One Big Nose was a version of the Chromag shape and I expect that was from Velo or DDK...

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?

Of course everything is relative but the society in which we all live is in no way green and it's certainly not sustainable If 50-70 years ago we knew what we know now I think we could have built a sustainable society. What we wouldn't have in that society is people who have personal wealth equival...

read a criticism of cycling once, saying it wasn't green because we all eat more food so we have more impact FFS we all exhale CO2 so no animal is neutral BUT a bike is clearly way better than a car ( even at just a single production cost analysis never mind per mile used once made In case it wasn'...

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?

There's nothing sustainable in cycling 15hrs/week and wearing out components, traveling via car/plane/boat to an event in a different continent, eating pre-packaged food, pushing consumerism and sales of goods. I read a criticism of cycling once, saying it wasn't green because we all eat more food ...

Re: Who'd have thunk it, an interesting article on Road.cc?

Getting entrants to commit to reducing their driving miles throughout the year in some way would be much better and they might keep it up which is a long term benefit. It'd be good, and we could do a bit of both. Flying is 150-250g per km per person Vs driving at about 100-150g. So if I fly to the ...

Re: 2.5kg too heavy for bar harness ?

I don't think that's too much, no. I think the bar height and the bag's distance from the steering axis is more important than the difference between for ex. 1.5 and 2.5kg bag weight. Some bike layouts handle weight here better than others. Bar harnesses like the Salsa Cradle punts the bag further o...

Re: What is the ultimate shelter

Another vote for the found shelter option. If bikepacking is about lightweight minimalism (a big if, but for the sake of the point) then a bivi bag only approach and hoping to find shelter when you need cover is the lightest and most minimal. Also I like the wing-it attitude, it guarantees the eleme...
