@frogatthefarriers, I think we chatted briefly on a lane in the first few hour or 2 of this years WRT? You'd just visited the old house we'd passed.

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
I read something yesterday where somebody was describing a chunky off road drop bar 29er as 'gravel-plus' Couldve been me .. I've been using that term for a while at work and prob also on STW. The marketing view of it is 'gravel' whereas the reality of it all now is there's Gravel Lite / All-...

Re: Merino padded shorts
One of the most common causes of damage to merino wool clothing is general purpose biological detergents. They should not be used as they contain enzymes designed to digest protein-based food stains and over time, these can damage protein fibres and cause holes. Wool and Silk are both protein based...

Re: WTD Flared Drop Bars: Genetic Digest or Ritchey VentureMax
Good call I'd say - I think every flare drop fan should ride Digest bars at some point. They're extreme but they're great. FWIW I ended up not having the top sections level where they go into into the hoods like most bars are set up now, but sloped down more like a classic road bar would have been. ...

Re: WTD Flared Drop Bars: Genetic Digest or Ritchey VentureMax
I Have some Pro Discover 30 degree shallow drops FS, they're the 42cm versions as I thought the hoods area looked wide. Rode 200 or so miles on them and decided although the drops area was perfect, I needed a slightly wider hoods position so I bought some 44s last week. £25 plus post? I think post c...

I like the Ortlieb accessory pocket roll-top bag, if the straps and slot/sleeves on the back match up with your bar harness it can be really useful.

ha, thanks Shafiq, nice offer but I'd feel bad taking you up on that since I work at Madison who distribute Shimano ... so that makes me even more frugal / tight! I don't track my mileage but all of them (8 sets across 520, 540, XT and XTR specs) have been in rotation on 5 bikes for maybe 13 or 14 y...

MYOGLL - recommend me some metal filler?
Make Your Own Gear Last Longer .. I have a lot of Shimano M520 and M540 pedals and though the bearing grease purge system is one of the most impressive bits of 'lasts forever..' bike part design I've worn out the contact faces at the sides of the pedal body on most of them. This means my foot and le...

Re: Recommend a dry bag for saddlebag holster
I have a Wildcat tapered bag, it's about 8 years old and the one hole it has was from a rubbing strap and was patched with Kampa tape. I have a spare one but just haven't needed it yet. I think the beauty of the Wildcat seat harness design is the bag doesn't move inside the harness so abrasion can b...

Thanks Chris, that's all good to know. Useful link for the sliding section. Hope all's well? Saw Chris Ny. in town the other day.
Thanks John. The pics in the OP were from RS actually, just wasn't sure if they were a good supplier for things like this.

Re: Tour Divide 2024
Another thing on the results and faster times is in 2017(?) our jameso finished in a little over 18 days in a sprint for 3rd place, he was 5th iirc. This year on what I think is a slower course, he would have been sprinting to get in the top 20. Race numbers have about doubled since jameso’s run so...

DIY Frames and fixtures - Aluminium section joins and sliders
Not bike frames, but related to some work on bike frames - I need to get an accurate rectangular frame with a sliding/adjustable upright set up. The upright will slide / move and clamp along one of the rectangle's sides and hold a laser pointer that can move up/down to take X/Y dimensions. It doesn'...

I have a bag of those old Mavic inserts somewhere. I expect it won't be long before Shrader drilling is the norm for tubeless and you just use the insert to put Presta tubes in in emergencies. Any Shrader valve with a removable core should do the trick, I've used valves cut from old inner tubes perh...
