That's very clever. If if they come up for sale I'll try to resist buying one :)

Re: OS maps on touch?
I use Memory Map on my iPhone and iPad but I have no idea how they compare with others. It seems to work though. I used to have to pay £13 for a chunk of OS 1:50000 (a chunk was enormous) but on the iPad it has changed and seems to be a one off payment of £25 for anywhere. If anybody can tell that I...

Ah yes, that's probably the difference. The old timers didn't have reliably warm mattresses.s8tannorm wrote:I think quilts make much more sense (than they used to) with the advent of better/warmer mats.

Re: Using a quilt AND a sleeping bag?
I would like a quilt to work for me; less material so less bulk and weight, but my experience of quilts has been pretty negative. When I was a motor borne camper I used a British Army green maggot bag. When I went back to the bike I bought a RayWay quilt kit but found it none too warm. Then I bought...

Re: Using a quilt AND a sleeping bag?
I have a JacksRBetter Hudson River quilt which I never found warm enough except in Summer. I felt cold about 5ºC above its rated lower limit, but I know now that I do sleep very cold. I have used the quilt with my Cumulus 350 bag (works best inside the bag) and it has boosted that well. I find a dow...

Re: Vegetarian/vegan food.
I don't want to sound like the Vegan police but actually no 'Nature Valley' bars are vegan as they contain honey :geek: Very true. I wrongly used vegan as a short hand for a non dairy vegetarian diet. NDV? I am following the 'Plant Programme' by Prof. Jane Plant which isn't strictly vegan but comes...

Re: Kit list for a Newbie
A typical kit list for me would be something like: Bar Harness: Quilt Sleeping mat Down jacket Bivvy bag Hat (in the shape of a bear) Frame Bag: Cooking kit - stove, mug, spoon, windshield, lighter Food Torch, first aid stuff, knife and maybe a little radio Tarp pole Seat Pack: Tarp Groundsheet Peg...

I bought mine early last year to replace a squeaky Ajungiliak (sp?) - furry yellow thing. I slept we'll on that but find the Exped a better shape.

Re: MYOG Forum - opinions
Would the mods consider a separate MYOG forum board on the website? My own opinion is that it isn't really needed. I reckon the more sub boards a forum has, the more trouble it is to navigate round. The above is just my opinion though, so more than happy to hear what anyone/everyone else thinks abo...

Re: Vegetarian/vegan food.
I'm a vegetarian (30 years) and a vegan (two weeks) so no outdoors experience of the latter. Following surgery six years ago I lost my 'desire' for food so I can treat it as fuel and not worry about whether it smells good, or not. That isn't going to be a lot of help to you, but following is what I ...

I use 55g of Waitrose Porridge and bran mix with 25g of currants and I have it with just enough cold water to dampen it, or, if I am cooking, I pour my coffee on it.

Re: Alfine 11 shifter
Thanks for that. I reckon it's over complicated and wish that they did a simple rotary like one for the 8 speed shifter, but Shimano kit doesn't seem to fail too often. I have considered cutting and filing a chunk off the thumb shifter but haven't got around to it, as yet.

Wanted: Revelate Viscacha Seat Pack
Now I know it will fit my Thudbuster it's a Viscacha I want.
Earlier two strap around the seatpost preferred but later one strap would do. Well worn or slightly damaged also acceptable now I can use (sort of) a sewing machine.
Cheers

Re: So, rigid forks?
Thats good info on the rohloff ta. The weight is a bit of a worry. I expect it will be on my mind a little if I decide to go for one. I would just go for an alfine 11 for cost wise if it wast for that god awful shifter!!! J-Tek said last year that they were working on an alternative shifter for the...

Lol! I was just looking at the 3/4s and looking at my legs and thinking 'we have a compromise!' I've bought 3/4 Humvees but I don't know where I'm going to find the courage to wear them in public. I may have to change into them about 20 mile from home where I'm unlikely to meet anyone who knows me :)

Re: WTD Large Seat pack
So, that's my bicycle, and like many other things, I gave this a try without knowing I wasn't supposed to work. I guess I'm a little surprised to read that it's not really compatible with the long-travel Thudbuster, because it's gone reasonably well so far. Two things: the parallelogram does steepe...
