That would be great, thanks a lot. I'm hopeful for articles extolling the virtues of URT.

On the scrounge for some vintage mags.

I've got an odd request - do any of you have any goofy vintage MTB magazines you'd be happy parting with? I've been working with a bike coop* in Manchester and I'd like to get some ironically outdated reading material for when people are waiting for us to fix their bikes. I'm picturing a mountain bi...

Re: What are you reading now?

Newby was there to climb Mir Samir (19880 feet) with his Diplomatic Service buddy Hugh Carless (who only died in 2011). On the way out they met with Wilfred Thesiger who declared them to be a couple of pansies for using sleeping mats. That bit stuck with me. I still struggle to picture a 1950s infl...

Re: What are you reading now?

Right now, The Works of Robert Burns , because. But I'm currently re-reading Rory Stewart's The Places In Between , having first read it probably 15 years ago, with no idea who he was or would become. Quite shocking how little I remember of it, but made it more enjoyable to re-read! Recommended. St...

Re: OT: Morocco - hillwalking?

Can you link to your bike trips? I have searched previously nd not found much. Here's a bikepacking trip I did with a friend back in 2016: https://cyclocaust.blogspot.com/2016/11/bikepacking-in-morocco-toubkal-national.html?m=1 It was a mostly mix of singletrack and gravel roads. We had to alter th...

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll give it a bash and see how it goes.

Once I've found a supplier for the tap that doesn't look like an AliExpress scam, anyway.

Threading handlebars for storage?

How bad of an idea would it be to use a tap to add an internal thread (probably M20 based on the internal diameter of ~18.5mm) to a pair of aluminium mountain bike handlebars? I'd keep the depth pretty minimal, maybe 7mm. I want to knock up some handlebar storage units, and a threaded bar plug that ...

Re: Lakes 2 Day

In March, you're probably better basing a 3 day tour on a Jennride route, rather than the L200. Conditions can be harsh higher up in spring, even on an unloaded bike. Going over Jacobs Ladder, Edale is about 530m asl, whereas Angle Tarn to Styhead is 730m. There are hundreds of miles of great trail...

Re: Lakes 2 Day

Generally the BWs in the centre of the Lakes are big full-suss routes whereas those on the edges are much more rideable for most. The Jennride from a couple of years back headed from Staveley over to Wasdale and back, that might be an option I'll have a look. Riding these loaded might be needlessly...

Re: Lakes 2 Day

It's hard to comment without knowing your experience of steep and rocky stuff, but it's certainly doable. Plenty in the peaks, not normally loaded though. I'm not cocky about it - the Lakes is a real step up from my local stuff. Much of it has been covered on various Jennride routes, but that push ...

Lakes 2 Day

I modified the lakesland 200 considerably to try and get a 2 night (so ~2.5 days riding) route outtov it. Does it looks reasonable to you fellas? Both experienced mountain bikers, and we'll be on not-xc hardtails. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=12LVkD6Iz9qnxdAOzutMfgoYr5pM_q5M&usp=sharin...

Labour policy to expand wild camping?

Early days, and the article is pretty speculative but, damn, this would be amazing. "In the bill, which is currently being drawn up by the party amid widespread but careful optimism that the next general election will see Labour return to office, there could be a new law that would allow nation...

Re: How to.... Take your bike on a plane

I've always used the CTC bike bag, then just taking it with me. I just wanted to repeat Mr conner's point about removing the rear mech/hanger. My buddy almost had a tour ruined when his partner's bike took a hit on the mech during transport. He had to spend the first day of his Slovakian tour bendin...

Matt Beer of pinkbike thought the saddle angle thing was a decent bit of kit. He kinda glossed over the price tag a little.

Re: How much tech do we actually need?

The lal bike split drivetrain seems like a pretty solid concept, for a certain type of pretty wild racing. The whole bike's got to be built around it, so it's a significant investment. Enduro, Downhill, makes a lot of sense to protect the derailer as much as possible and looks like it gets over the ...

Re: Will a slack (~64 degree) headangle render a trail bike needlessly unwieldy as a bikepacking set-up?

Wasn't the 456 designed to be slack (in relative terms) while still using a reasonably short fork or was that just the 'summer season' version? Don't think I answered this - I've got the summer season (actually purchased off the BB classifieds years ago, what a great investment). The summer season ...
