Re: European Divide ITT.

Met up with him last Tuesday for about 30km on my local trails, he seemed to be enjoying the riding saying it was much greener than he anticipated. It's actually been bone dry for nearly 3 months and was 36 degrees when we were riding. He's been putting in some long shifts in the days since, riding ...

Re: European Divide ITT.

According to his tracker, he's currently looking for a way across the river Ebro. Clearly he's discounted the narrow bridge that carries a live railway line that features a thigh high guard rail that is all that's separating you from plummeting 50ft into the wide river below. Those who have ridden t...

Re: European Divide ITT.

another 500 miles ticked off in double quick time, he crossed into Cataluña this morning and is climbing to 1,000m along a section of the Transpyr route that I rode some years ago with Blackhound and Gairy of this parish. The trail involves a steep twisty corrugated concrete road then a fairly rough...

Jilted John now known as John Shuttleworth periodically appears on Radio 4 in a spectacularly unfunny sitcom. Both were inventions of comedian Graham Fellows.

Re: European Divide ITT.

Passed the 3,000mile mark this morning. He has commented that it's getting a lot hillier now he's well into France. The next few days involve a gradual descent into the Rhone valley then back up to ride parallel to the Mediterranean North of Montpellier. Hope he's packed some hot weather gear, the t...

Re: European Divide ITT.

2 weeks done and just over half way. Yesterday's mileage was reduced by an off route trip into Hanover, he was reporting a bald rear tyre so I assume he replaced it. Onwards to Cologne then running parallel to the Rhine where it's considerably hillier through the vineyards.

Re: What would you get?

Better security. Seriously, and depressingly, there have been many cases where the scrotes return a few weeks later and steal your replacement, brand new, bikes as they know either the insurance has paid out or you're so bereft that you've bought replacements yourself. They also know the layout of y...

Re: Cycling in the heat.

Aah fully legit then. Not trying to talk you out of it, I'll leave that to the writeup  but this year could be problematic regarding water supply. Before the 2020 event I contacted the organisers to ask if there was a cue sheet showing places where water was available as there was no indicatio...

Re: Cycling in the heat.

No problem Rich, just as a matter of interest, are the organisers offering a late entry ie were you on the reserve list, or are you taking someone else's entry? When I did it they were very hot on identity, checking passports or identity cards. As the report says, the event took place between 2 lock...

Denmark done inside 2 days, really smashing the miles on the flatlands. 2,000miles completed in 11 and a bit days. More flat in northern Germany before crossing the Rhine where it gets a lot lumpier.

Re: Yay, it's cheery Friday.

Very cheery Friday here in rural Cataluña, spent the morning building the furniture that we bought yesterday at the he'll on earth known as IKEA Barcelona. 6 months ago we bought a little house in our local village of El Perello and have been renovating it with new bathroom, kitchen, wiring, plumbin...

Re: Universal front pouch

Supply is sporadic here too, they just appear in clearance sales and then it's odd items. Guess the distributor giving up is understandable given the current shitshow. Must be more trouble than it's worth trading in niche products from EU suppliers. Recently tried to buy a gasket and oil change grub...

Re: Universal front pouch

Id echo the Ortlieb suggestion, I've had one for 5 years and it works well, there are aluminium g clips that work with their bar roll but a strong strap that goes round the bars. Lots of manufacturers only work best if you use their roll and pouch, a way to lock you in to buying both, but I've found...

I'd say it's not clear that the Brompton record that was broken, either in the first couple of lines or in the main text. It infers that this is the fkt on a bike and the bike was a Brompton making it even more impressive. The phrases "James arrived at J oG midday yesterday to set the fkt on th...

What record has been broken exactly, Gethin Butler did it in just over 44 hours 20 years ago and 4 years ago it was done in 43.23. 83 hours seems positively sedentary

Buenos tardes Rich, yes I did a full write up it was entitled Racing in a Time of Covid and wasn't very complimentary about the organisers' attitude to the large number of UK based riders who, through no fault of their own, couldn't ride due to travel restrictions and their total abandonment of anyo...

Re: European Divide ITT.

1500km in 5 days is impressive across the wilds of Swedish Lapland, should get hillier now as he's approaching the ski areas around Ostersund. ETA of another 15 days is a bit optimistic , the section that I'm familiar with is not easy riding.

Now THIS Is A Trip I Really Fancy

Just stumbled across this on YouTube https://youtu.be/M8mhIdZoVow The combination of Heath Robinson engineering, folding bikes, adventure in remote places and chilled travel is fantastic. Re: European Divide ITT.

Nearly 750km done and he's still in deepest Lapland. The remoteness of this area is hard to comprehend, I rode a motorbike up to the North Cape about 10 years ago and came back through the area he is in at the moment. I nearly ran out of fuel as the distance between filling stations was so great, it...

Re: Free train travel in Spain on journeys up to 300k until the end of the year

I've been doing a deeper dive into this offer and, surprise surprise , there's a catch. The offer only applies to multi journey tickets such as the 10 journey tickets or season tickets for commuter lines around the big cities called Cercianas or Media Distancia. You can't just rock up to the station...

Guess you'll be driving down the AP7 then, we're near El Perello, km 1,100 if you fancy breaking up the journey. It's 4 hours from here to Alicante.

Bear in mind, masks are still compulsory on Spanish trains, hospitals and pharmacies.
