Re: Tow Path from Fort William to Fort Augusta
see if you can find the routes that the Trans Scotland Race people took. Jenny Tough wrote a blog and it had a pic of the strava fly-bys. (it isn't a fixed route.) I came over from Laggan to Ft William via Spean Bridge on the Trans Scotland and I think most other riders did the same so none of us w...

Re: Findhorn river and Moray coastal trail.
There's also a description of the route on the Scotways HP website Ah yes! From that link, this photo shows where I got to before deciding it wasn't passable: http://www.heritagepaths.co.uk/uploads/40448_bf55bab297f833c179626732d35adb1c.jpg Although, the river looks a lot lower in that photo than w...

Re: Findhorn river and Moray coastal trail.
There's no marked path around the tops of the hills so it would be a fairly rough hike I expect. Like I say, I went past the ropebridge trying to find the same path you've spotted on the map which traverses close to the river. I couldn't see it, so I turned around and went home. I will try and attem...

Re: Findhorn river and Moray coastal trail.
I don't think the route on the north side of the river past the rope bridge would be very nice (maybe not even passable at all). I had planned the same route there last weekend - must have seen the same path marked on the OS map that you've seen. I couldn't see the path when i got there but i didn't...

Re: Findhorn river and Moray coastal trail.
Depending what you consider the 'source' of a river to be. On the OS map, 2 different rivers join at 653122 and only become the "River Findhorn" from that point. So, does that make it the source? Or are you going to follow the longer of those rivers upstream to where it begins? The bridge ...

Good read!
To put your mind at rest a bit in regard to the Spanish lads, they would have been heading for Bob Scott's bothy near Derry Lodge.

Re: ethics of chinese carbon frames
They said they were 90% ready to start production their carbon frames and just needed to find a factory to produce them, yet further down the article they say: We’ve learned that carbon bikes can be very unreliable compared to aluminum bikes. So did they learn that at the start and decide to just ma...

Re: Ergon Grips Clones
I have some of these . They are lock-on at both ends. The ergo 'wing' part is quite soft and flexes when you put your weight on it. It doesnt give as much support as the proper ergo grips with more rigid wings but I find them really comfortable - but then I also find standard round bars comfortable ...

Re: Selfsupported ethics.
I personally think any pre-booking is not in the spirit even if it is in the rules. 100%. Take it as it comes - first to arrive gets the reward for pedalling faster. Honesty and self regulation is fundamental if these event results are to be meaningful, so knowing the basic principles, and it's pre...

1. Calling ahead about services is research and planning. That's what I was thinking. If you can look up the locations and opening times of restaurants before the race, surely you could look up their menu as well? Unless he means phoning up to ask if they still have stock of one of their normal men...

I'm considering non-stop but I'm not sure about sub 24 - I think 26-28hours is more likely.

Re: TransScotlandrace
It's been raining so the feshie may be up a little. Ah! If there's a river crossing to be done that might sway things even further in favour of the road route (which i'm 90% sure i'll be doing anyway). I know the bridge near the bothy is gone now but what about the bridge further down towards Auchl...

Re: TransScotlandrace
I'm doing it. The only real route variation I can see is between Braemar Castle and Inverlochy Castle. Following the cairngormsloop route from braemar to glenfeshie is roughly 35miles shorter than road via braemar > glenshee > pitlochry > dalwhinnie. There's a few miles of hike-a-bike over the Geldi...

Re: Power Meters in Bikepacking
Once you get used to riding with a power meter it becomes quite easy to go out for a few hours and stick to whatever power zone based purely on RPE and not looking much at the power meter. It gets harder and harder to estimate your power from RPE as you fatigue on longer rides and multi-day events. ...

Does ringing people for info while en route, or looking at Track leaders for other riders position, or asking others ahead of you for rider positions and times count? Yes is my opinion. His rules seem a bit contradictory on this point for me. Before the race starts, it's OK to read trip reports, bo...

Not cycled it yet, but the North and west coast are beautiful. I'm not keen on doing the east coast though, so I'm planning a variation for that. I agree. The A9 down the east coast is horrible to cycle. You could ride the route round to wick then get the train back to inverness without missing much.
