Garmin Etrex 20x - route help

Post by polarcherry »

Hi,

I have a Garmin Etrex 20x which i want to load gpx routes for Spain onto and its a competely different process to my garmin edge 800 and its got me completely baffled as i cant get them to show up.

The Garmin Etrex 20x has topo maps for the whole of Europe loaded on already

I have downloaded a load of walking routes (30+) from the web (linked to the walking book i have bought of the region) and i have cut and pasted them into the 'gpx' folder on the etrex when plugged in.

I then expected to see them all listed in the 'track manager' folder on the garmin when turned on, but nothing is showing at all.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

The etrex menu display routes and tracks in different folders.

Only tracks will be in the track manager list.

There's a 'where to' menu in that are tracks and routes as two separate folders.

Theres nothing in there either?

Am i right to drop the gpx files directly into the 'gpx' folder within the 'garmin' folder when connected by USB to my Mac?

I plug in the garmin so it shows as a drive on the computer. If it's an etrex then save as a gpx file.

Open the folder called garmin and drop the file in the folder called gpx. That's all.
From that thread - that's what I have done but it doesn't seem to work as they are not showing in any of the options once the garmin is switched on despite the gpx files being there in the gpx folder?????

Couple of things.
Have you got an SD card?
Is the gpx file on that or the Garmin?
Only ask because my Garmin occasionally loses the sd card and I have jam the holder in again.
If I am uploading a big file then tend to add it to the sd card.
Have you tried direct upload from BaseCamp and let the unit sort it out?

The etrex does have an SD card but the files are all integral to the unit with internal memory

Think i have worked it out though. The gpx files i have loaded do seem to be visible on the map, BUT.........

They are just displayed as a series of individual waypoints rather than being a 'route' with all the dots joined together. Which makes them a bit useless. Any reason its displaying it like this?

I was expecting a proper route like it would be displayed on the garmin edge 800?????

The internal memory on the extrex is minimal at best, if hazard a guess that the file is too large for the unit on the internal memory

A trick I picked up by trial and error because the origin of some files seem to assign max waypoints.

If its a route imported from somewhere create a track and delete the original imported route.
Then recreate the route from that track using auto assign way points and change type of waypoints to something manageable like dots.
