The Raleigh Story BBC4 21.00 tonight (15/3)

Post by psling »

Pedalling Dreams: The Raleigh Story on BBC4 tv tonight at 9.00pm, anyone going to be watching?
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

Ooh, might be interesting. Took the vintage Raleigh out for a ride today as it was nice and sunny.

I was thinking about him yesterday. While these modern day feats of endurance to challenge (and beat) the year record are impressive, a short ride on my vintage Raleigh soon puts into perspective just how much harder it must have been for Tommy.

Having read the mountain bike book which featured the crane brothers trip to the centre of the earth and see that he still has that bike (complete with gear shifters sawn in half to save weight! ) . That was something and to see his obvious affection for it. To round the story off, I got my first podium and prize money on a lugged Raleigh bike which I call "the Iraqi supergun ", it probably weighs the same!

I couldn't sleep so I've just watched it. Well worth the late night (early morning).

Coincidence. I watched it late last night too for the same reason.

Enjoyable and interesting watch. Found myself reminiscing about my Raleigh pacer which is the first bike I can really remember. Racing red, drop bars, five speed.

It was interesting and nice to reminisce. My first (proper) bike was a Hercules - didn't realise my dad was a cheapskate after all these years  !!

Just watched it on catch up, all good stuff, particularly the BMX bit!Lets get rad.... pity they missed out on the grifter and their near re-rise to fame at the end of the '90s with the DH machines as raced by Emma Guy which made them cool again.

It did cross my mind that with the current hipster / bikepacking / all steel etc trends they could start knocking out some decent stuff again...

With my background of 2 'skip build' Raleigh's as a kid (a Chipper and a frame only built up Rodeo) and then my first MTB (ATB) being an 1985 Maverick, I enjoyed the overview it gave.

A charming story. :-)
Some of those exploits put some modern-day worries about "what kit for ...." into perspective: 200 miles from Huddersfield to Rhyl & back in 2 days as a 10-year old girl on a 3-speed roadster  . Has cycling become too complicated?

Brilliant bike. Mine survived so many crashes without breaking it must have been made like a tank. :-bd

Oh yes, so true.

My Chipper lived on with bent forks for a long while.
