Bivi + Quilt + Mat on the Outside

Post by Chew »

Out of those who quilt, how you you get on, if you have to use your mat outside of the bivi?

Just wondering if you dont notice, sweaty touching the bivi.

Same here. All in as I need to wrap the elastic ties around the mattress

I'm all in too. I wouldn't fancy just having the quilt in the bag, but I like to be able to turn over in the night without everything going pear shaped.

I suspect a silk liner would improve things considerably if you had the mat outside.

Have I suddenly transferred to STW

I know the pros/cons of each approach, just asking for experience of those who do.
It's me asking, not someone starting out asking

Have I? I assumed you were lacking in quilt experience, having seen you use the other two parts of the equation…

Do I win a prize for answering correctly? :-bd
sweaty touching the bivi.
The sweaty / clammy thing generally isn't an issue (well not for me), given I've usually got some type of clothing on.

I've found that if I use a narrower cut bivy so my mat is on the outside, it tends to have a more pronounced hood, and combined with a quilt without a hood, means that turning on my side tends to either expose my back or have me breathing into the hood

Mat on the inside usually means a bigger bivy so that is less of an issue

Also, I've found that skin in contact with the mat leaves it feeling clammy, whereas wearing a very thin layer limits this significantly
