Films - what would you like to see?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

The Swedish film thread got me thinking and I thought, I wonder what type of bikepacking film people would like to see?

Given some previous comments regarding films, it would seem that things we don't like, include the following;

1/ Moaning about stuff.
2/ People banging on about spirtituality and 'finding themselves'.
3/ Things appearing perfect - you know, perfect trails, perfect sunset, lovely campfire, etc, etc, etc.
4/ People producing 'bikepacking' films that appear to be doing so in an effort to get on what might be called 'The bandwagon'.
5/ Anything with an overly American slant.
6/ Being soft.
7/ Being stupid.
8/ Being soft and stupid which results in point 1.
9/ Endless panorama shots with some luke-warm, non-descript music played over the top.
10/ The voice over man trying hard to make dull, everyday happenings sound edgy and risky.

I've got a few ideas about what I'd like to see, which might result in a Bear Bones Bikepacking B movie later in the year but I really wondered what anyone else thought?

Anything interesting/inspirational/unusual for mere mortals who only want to ride 50 miles a day [or less].

Its good to see 'the boys' riding balls to the wall occasionally, but I would rather watch stuff that makes me think 'I want to do that/go there'

Cheers

11/ Nothing longer that 5 minutes, unless it's got none of 1 to 10 in it at all. And tell a story beginning, middle and an end.

This sort of thing:

Doesn't have to be about racing, but it does have to inspire. Don't care how American it is so long as the people are genuine, not on-trend twats full of BS.

Music is a big one, so many downhill films et al use metal music and it's rather off putting. Watched a ski film the other day and the music was spot on, chilled with a beat to it

Point 4 needs to cover all aspects of blogging and vlogging!

Point 9 I can tolerate, the have a soft spot for scenery.

Films that take you on a journey are the best ones, something with a plot but not planned.

One of my favourites
https://vimeo.com/69045994

It shows adventure (did I just type that?), scenery, a human side to the author and humour. The film draws you in, you care about the character and gives you a nice sense of achievement at the end of the film. American but not the Yee Ha guff stuff :-)

And this
https://vimeo.com/ondemand/northofthesun/108068644

I have zero interest in surfing, and I mean no interest but this works. Young and plucky. Shows hardship but without being whingy!

Watched this the other day, or most of it. Great scenery in the film

I rarely make it to the end of a cycling film. But "Ride the Divide" did it for me (apart from the dodgy Alan Goldsmith takes) as it was just about the right balance of drama, scenery and making me think I could *possibly* attempt it myself. In bikepacking there are mega-heros and ordinary mortals, there are sub standard bits and great bits, there's humour and also times when things are desperate, there's food and drink, sunsets and sunrises, swearing and often a real sense of camaraderie. If at the end of the film you saw a bit of your past, present or future self then its a winner in my view.

I'm a fan of this sort of stuff, with people as normal as possible. Not crazy fit, not crazy pretty, just trying to get out there and enjoy themselves, but at the same time being normal stupid / soft human beings. Some people are just too superhuman. Hard to identify with them!

Actually, now you mention it, that kind of ticks all the points:

1/ Moaning about stuff ... not moaning, simply stating fact.
2/ People banging on about spirtituality and 'finding themselves' ... none of that going on. We couldn't have found our arse with both hands in that wind.
3/ Things appearing perfect - you know, perfect trails, perfect sunset, lovely campfire, etc, etc, etc ... uhm.
4/ People producing 'bikepacking' films that appear to be doing so in an effort to get on what might be called 'The bandwagon' ... and again, uhm.
5/ Anything with an overly American slant ... a third uhm in a row.
6/ Being soft ... don't think so.
7/ Being stupid ... posssibly fall down on this one.
8/ Being soft and stupid which results in point 1 ... Can't be because there was no moaning.
9/ Endless panorama shots with some luke-warm, non-descript music played over the top ... we had the music of nature.
10/ The voice over man trying hard to make dull, everyday happenings sound edgy and risky ... voice over man trying hard to make the edgy and risky sound perfectly normal.

Same here ! We're not all ultra athletes ... some of us are just normal folks. I'll never do 150miles in a day.... I'm completely happy doing an interesting ride of a manageable length. I like taking time to enjoy the ride and the company, time to take in the views, time to have coffee or a beer.

That's one of my favourites as well. I saw it after he and his climbing partner dissappeared on a climb, I don't think they were found, assumed knocked off the mountain in an avalanche. It made his piece to camera before the river crossing when he's saying goodbye to his family in case he doesn't make it tough to watch.

Seems the BearBones spirit is alive and kicking in Alaska: have a look at the film at the bottom of the text.

I am loving "Furious Cycling" it should be mandatory to append it to every cycling film ever.
