Coddiwomple (v.): To travel purposefully towards an as-yet unknown destination.

I came across this word again just now and it got me thinking.....

Is it just me that would be interested in a bikepacking 'event' that didn't give out the full route in advance?

Maybe you just get the total distance, alt gain and terrain type.

There would be logistical issues as you'd need a person with a laptop at each point you wanted to have to release the next section of the route to GPS devices but sure that could be arranged.

It could end up being a pain in the @ss but then again it could be an interesting twist on the normal bikepacking event format???

Just a random thought.....

If each location had mobile coverage then you could have a code at each location. When the entrants find the first checkpoint they text the code to a central number and you just text the next grid ref back to them. Getting a GPX back to them could be tricky - they'd need a GPS/phone combo that would work together.

Odd thought I know... but you could have these paper maps thingy ma bobs at the check points. They could even be just in a plastic box or at a cafe and then there's no need for mobile reception or a guy with a laptop.

Ugh sounds awful!

Send organiser a few sd cards beforehand and collect the next part when you get there? Still sounds like faff though!

I thought about organising a fell race along these lines. Collect the next map at the control, or will it be the finish...

It does all seem like a bit of a faff but surely there's a faff-free way to do something like this???

Paper maps would do it but you'd put off a large section of the intended audience.

define a start location.
at the start the next checkpoint is released.
at the next checkpoint the next checkpoint is released.

work out the best way to get from A-B-C etc.

"you'd put off a large section of the intended audience" - yes there's always a bright side isn't there

Orienteering?

Just have the next GR posted at each checkpoint.

Oh, and Stravaig would be a similar idea. To head off for a journey, not sure of where it'll take you.

Our fell running club did something similar.

4 maps iirc each with controls on randomly given out. Collect the checkpoints for a map then return to base for next map.

So everyone visits all the CPs but in a different order to everyone else.

All the variations mentioned above would work but I was thinking more of something song the lines of a 200-300km event but with no idea where you'll be going when you start (or even which part of the country you'll finish in).

Appeals to me.

Obviously logistically a nightmare and technologically tricksy but still.....

You're looking to give out a portion of the route at each CP? I can see that's more complex than just providing the GR of the next CP.

Mix it with Geocaching...so you have to find the hidden GR as well.

Coddiwomple (v.): To travel purposefully towards an as-yet unknown destination.
That sounds very similar to most trips I take :-bd

Sounds like many adventure races I have done in TX/US, except they mix it up with some kayaking and walking too. You never know what is happening next, after the group of controls you have, or when you will be done or if there is just a little bit more added on.

I get Strikhedonia most Fridays when I slam the laptop shut.

In fairness I think a lot of those words will resonate with the people on here

As Scotroutes said orienteering very occasionally had events like this. You navigated to the first control and found a map that told you where to go next and so on around the course.

Occasionally? Regular training technique when I was a junior, it's called a Norwegian Score.

Pyro,

Maybe different parts of the country or club for popularity. I doubt I did more than 2 of them in almost 20 years but was aware of them as an exercise.

Maybe! I was in the North West Junior Squad and it was something we did probably every other training weekend. Always enjoyed it, certainly more so than trying to navigate on contour-only maps (which was another coaches favourite wheeze...)
