Chilkoot Safari: Gravel Rally. S France. March.

Post by Mugsys_m8 »

Hi all,

I thought some of you might be interested in this: http://chilkoot-cdp.com/project/chilkoot-safari/ . I know Gairy M has signed up.
Basically I think it is 2 days of mostly gravel on a set course with certain timed stages and a communal bivvy-out and evening meal in restaurant etc.

It's down on the s.coast of France, near St. Tropez and Tolulon i.e. between Marseille and Nice. I know the area well from road cycling and at the time of year it is normally really good weather and not busy. Certainly nothing like March in the UK.

I plan to be there, leg recovery permitting. It would be good if any of you fancy it. It is the 1st year they have run it, but regularly do long distance road type events.
(For example the annual Born to Ride which is this year running form Strasbourg to Montpellier via. 'a few countries and a few hills')

I remember an early 90s MBi (I think) article about that region. Always wanted to go but haven't yet... tempting...!

Was almost sold until the pricetag appeared and the words "timed stage". I'm such a cheap bastard in my old age. :)

Price includes the evening meal. Kit is transported for you so not a bikepacking event per. se. So hope I haven't broken some forum rule or offended anyone. Happy to help with any translation if required.

Nah...not offended...just cheap ;)

It does sound like fun though...bigger hills down there than here.

What the....?

I swear I've never heard of this!

Although, a vague bell is being gently rung of a conversation in a pub that may explain why I'm apparently entered.

I wonder if I paid in advance?

That aside, I really like the look of it - I might just go!

Aaaah, yup, now I remember.

Still don't remember actually signing up though???

And you were in MBC? It's my second home! Didn't see you there.

I checked and the other event (also gravel, also France but not March) is a different thing entirely.

Sounds good and would fill a March-shaped hole in my schedule.
