Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
The stations that would have me closest would be Pen-y-bont (for Rhayader start), Caersws (for nth of Rhayader/sth of BB Towers) or Mach (nth of BB Towers) depending on where you're looking at riding.
@Ben - I could get to Builth...depending on route choice, it might be easier to pedal on in. We'll see how this pans out :)

Ben, I emailed you a gpx file last night

Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
Thanks a lot Stuart, really appreciate the time you put in to do it. Just had a look through the route (laptop at work), looks great!
For those coming, we're doing around 42 miles in total. It's about 6 miles from the start to Nant Syddion, with the remainder the following day. Start point between Ponterwyd and Llangurig, looks like a bit of a shove to get to the Bothy!
I have more details but didn't want to share too much on here given we'll be leaving cars. Easiest thing is to PM me your email address and I'll ping you the GPX that Stuart has kindly pulled together
Stuart - thanks again. Are there any bits we want to be aware of? (Water crossings, particularly horrendous bogs, frisky sheep). Are you joining us for the trip?
Scott - let me know re pick up. I'm coming up from the South (Builth Wells), if that makes any difference. Either way it's no problem
Richard G, Blackhound - what sort of time can you get there? I reckon I can be there for around 5pm (though might be a bit later if I pick up Scott)

All sounds good. I can ride in from Caersws or if anyone is coming through from the direction of Welshpool, I'm happy for a lift out.

Will be fine to get there any time. Am self employed so getting away from work isn't too much of a problem.

Nothing nasty ... however, the BW that drops off the windfarm down into the valley to the bothy is steep Can't recall anything which isn't rideable either up or down.Stuart - thanks again. If it's where I think it is, it's a slate-y descent with a creek at the bottom of the forest. This is the joiner between Nant Rhys/Siddion forests?

Ben
PM sent.
I will be in Tewkesbury at the weekend and if weather is fair will hang around the area for a few days. If weather is rubbish I may go home rather than pay for camping etc.
Whatever, I can get there for any time seeing as I am retired, I will wait for gpx to arrive but may just leave the van at a campsite in Devils Bridge.

Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
Looks largely a reverse of the route I took with Chew last January except we came through Nany-y Arian.
Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
Lets aim for a 5pm meet with a 5.30pm leave time which'll give plenty of time for faffing
We can meet in the car park, which is in the GPX
Kevin, if you're coming from Devils Bridge and want to meet somewhere else, like the bothy rather than the car park, just say
I'll be bringing some whisky with me, any preference between Glenfiddich and Glenlivet?

Yep ... the official BW splits off to the right half way down. Ignore that and continue straight down to the turning circle at the bottom, continue down the obvious rooty path through the trees but after 100 yards start to look for a little wooden bridge on your right below you. Cross that and follow the faint path until it spits you out onto the fire road.If it's where I think it is, it's a slate-y descent with a creek at the bottom of the forest. Do you know if there a water source nearby?
Will fill up a canteen for dinner, dessert and coffees

Route looks good...a mishmash of parts I've done during WRT/FF. Be nice to string 'em together.

Walk out the bothy door, turn left, go 100 yards towards the ruined barn and you'll find a stream with good water.Do you know if there a water source nearby?

Brilliant, thanks Stu - that's ideal!Bearbonesnorm wrote:Walk out the bothy door, turn left, go 100 yards towards the ruined barn and you'll find a stream with good water.Do you know if there a water source nearby?
Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
Everyone should have the GPX now, I'll send an email to everyone with my phone number and my car reg/details just in case
Lets meet in the car park at 5pm for a 5.30pm getaway (on Tuesday 10th)
No obvious stops en route so don't forget dinner, brekkie and snackage/lunch

Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
We can resupply at the petrol station in Ponterwyd. Presuming we're pitching up @ Nant Syddion, we can hit it in the morning.

You are indeed correct, Ponterwyd (and Staylittle) appear to be the only places we pass
Just sent an email out with contact details

Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
If a proper breakfast is called for, the Red Kite cafe 3/4 mile up the road from the petrol station is really good.

Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
I can second that breakie Stu has mentioned it's good.....The worm really appreciated it. I can recommend a good hill climb straight away afterwards also if u require one
Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
Ahhh....a proper cafe for brekky. Sounds much better with rest of the day resupply from the petrol station. Thanks for that, Stu.

Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
Shall we have brekkie in the cafe then? Means I'll pack less stuff for the start of the ride. I don't need the resupply as we're only out for 1 night and taking a few bits along with me is easy, but might do it if people want to stop
Re: Mid Week overnight in Mid Wales in Mid November
I'm happy for the brekky stop and I'll use the resupply...pick up some nibbles and a spare drink to get me through the day. Allows me to chomp through whatever I bring in the day before and not worry about keeping some back. Happy days.

Cool
We'll drop down to Ponterwyd, turn west to hit the cafe first thing
Then back to Ponterwyd for a pit stop at the petrol station (looks like a 'Premier' within a BP petrol station)
Then crack on
