29x3.0 on a Genesis Longitude

Post by Chuck »

Bit of a long shot…I’m thinking about buying some 29x3.0 tires (either Surly Knards or Maxxis Chronicles) from what I can make out my existing rims – Alex Rims 35mm wide should be ok. What I’m unsure about is if I will still be able to run my front mech??…I want to keep the granny ring.

If anyone has any experience running 3” tires on a Genesis Longitude what are your thoughts please, or does anyone know of any 29x2.75 tires on the market?

Thanks.

I believe it's only designed to run 1x with 3" tyres. The Vee Rubber 29+ tyre is apparently significantly narrower than a Knard, so you might get away with it. No real world experience, I'm afraid.

Having spent the winter with a Chronicle on the front, I can't help but wonder if there's anything to be gained by fitting a 29+ tyre to a 35mm rim? The rim isn't really wide enough to take full advantage of the carcass, so you're unlikely to get the real volume benefits of the tyre ... it just appears to be adding substantial extra weight where you least need it.

I ran a Knard on a Crest, which is a lot narrower than 35mm, for a few rides. It worked and definitely gave some of the benefits of 29+ But I never felt completely confident that it wouldn't burp horribly or roll off the rim, which was a (psychological) problem. I'd have thought a 29+ tyre on a 35mm rim was worth a try but wider would almost certainly be better.

I think the rim makes a massive difference. When I fitted a 2.4 X-King to a dually I could believe how big it was, it wasn't that much smaller than a Chronicle but it weighed 1/3 less.

I think a Longitude with 45mm+ rims and 2.4" X-Kings would be superb :-bd

I'm currently " researching" a 27.5x3" frame and it seems it will need Boost cranks/hub to cater for 3" tyres. I'd imagine that 29*3 has the same chainline issue.

Boost cranks have a 3mm wider chainline to match Boost 148 rear hubs (and matching frames, obviously)

I've just put a Vee Trax Fatty in the back of my El Mariachi on a Pacenti dl31 rim. I had to move the alternator plates all the way back and there isn't a great deal of clearance to the seat stays, but it fits. I thought chain line might be an issue but there is loads of room, so I would guess a 27.5+ would fit fine. If you are struggling then the Vee is much skinnier than a Knard on the same rim.
