Bikepacking.com did a feature on this last year, on a rigid. I do think there is a better option for shoving the chain across the block than something that dangles in the mud, but I'm not sure this is it....

Probably no snow left within a couple of years anyway, sell it while you can.
And there we all are, flying to trade shows, flying to ride our bikes somewhere. It's nuts. I need to ride out there again next year.

The lal bike split drivetrain seems like a pretty solid concept, for a certain type of pretty wild racing. The whole bike's got to be built around it, so it's a significant investment.

Enduro, Downhill, makes a lot of sense to protect the derailer as much as possible and looks like it gets over the downsides of gearboxes or hub gearing.

Everyone else can probably deal with the occasional rock strike on their dangly bit.
