Marin Muirwoods - Too heavy for bikepacking?

Post by dogthomson »

Morning all, first time poster here so please be gentle!

I have a Marin Muirwoods I bought as a robust commuter but fancy a bit of bikepacking, hence joining the forum.

While the Muirwoods is rock solid, I'm a bit worried it might be a bit lardy for longer jaunts, especially if loaded up with extra gear.

Does anyone here bikepack with a Muirwoods? I came across this on Medium where the guy uses one, but not found much else.

Any thoughts?

You'll be reyt. There's a wide spread of styles and weights across bikepacking bikes.

You’ll be fine, I’d hazard a guess my fat bike is heavier :-bd

Welcome to the forum. :-bd

No such thing as too heavy, you can be too light though. Standard rule is - If you're riding in a group then use a handicap system similar to horse racing where the lighter bikes/set-ups have to carry extra weight to make them match the heaviest. The "weights" on a Bearbones event will usually be cans of Carslberg Special Brew and Frey Bentos pies.

Cheers for the replies everyone.

Think I might load it up and check the weight.

Also, how do you cook a Frey Bentos pie on a camping stove!?

Nah, get out there mate. Doesn't really matter how heavy it is. We all (not all I expect) muck about with light bikes, parts and light kit, I suspect because we like mucking about with kit more than how much it actually matters for a bikepacking trip out.

Racing is different, but just getting out there.. it doesn't really matter.

I'd rather ride a 35kg set up into the hills than not ride into the hills after all.

Now, wheres my 8g stove  :-bd

My summer bike can be light but for the rest of the year my genesis is many things but light is not one of them.
If its just an overnighter then weight is not that much of a big deal IMHO . Over a week it does start to matter -Its not like i ever actually achieve fast i just increase range.

As said above the fun is not related to the weight

As others have said there will always be someone with lighter and heavier, its all about getting the miles in to suit what you have no matter how fast or slow.

I've used a Surly Wednesday 29 plus set up for a fee bike packing trips. The max it weighed was about 70lbs and for the WRT it was 65 lbs. I have also used a Giant Tough Road that weighed in, also with bottles, 45 lbs... I think you can get used to any weight really. Even on my first Snowdonia ride it was ok, just took a little getting used to. If that's the bike you have, then go for it!

mine is with 21 stone sat on it mate............. :-bd

but, they are pretty hefty. mine is built with tubes in, which alone had a lump. the surly running gear also aint light. bought as a frame alone and specced lighter could be ok, but it would be a bit like polishing a turd then...........
