Aerodynamics of luggage

Post by pistonbroke »

This video http://ridinggravel.forumchitchat.com/p ... ge-9695192 popped up in my inbox. Sort of stating the obvious and regrettably not including the effect of a bar bag which must be the most significant but interesting watching nonetheless.

Interesting article, probably more relevant to the trans-am style races than off-road speeds. Worth a look at Lael Wilcox, Mike Hall and Rob English road endurance bikes; quite different configurations to minimise aero drag.

GCN did a video on commuter bags in an air tunnel.

Panniers, rucksack and a bikepacking saddle bag.

Guess which came out best?

I'm not sure that the findings of a study looking at the aerodynamics of luggage can really produce any great revelations that go much beyond common sense?

Someone else got some windtunnel time a few years ago and bar bags weren't as bad as you'd think. The worst offenders appeared to be bags that stuck out sideways behind the rider's legs/hips — like Carradice.

All before the current wave of bikepacking-specific luggage.
