I've just found out Wifey and I are visiting her brother this weekend, apparently she told me ages ago! Anyway, he lives on the South Downs Way at a place called Steyning. She's going down by train on Friday evening so there's nothing to stop me going down earlier, say Thursday (or any day really), and heading off for an overnight stop somewhere.
Is it going to be a mudfest? Which way should I head, east or west?
What's the South Downs Way like this week?

Clagfest.
It's wet now, and it's due to rain at least 2 days this week so it'll still be wet and slippy. Ok if you like surfing in a sea made of clown make-up, or if you're set up for it.
Far better to get off the chalk onto the greensand as although that will be muddy it does at least drain well in parts. Only a very thin band of it along the south mind, with a lot more to the west and north of the weald. I just walked a section of the Surrey Hills, you'd be far better heading up to them for a ride.

Cheers Oli, I've been looking at the Sustrans routes too, I think the road might be a better choice.
