Northumberland Routes / Advice

Hi all,

i am after a bit of advice and inspiration if possible.

I would like to do a 3 day bike & bivi / bike and bothy trip into Northumberland and am wondering if anyone has any route reccomendations / details of trips they've done around the area.

I would either like to get the train to Newcastle and ride out from there into Northumberland National Park for 3 days riding over 2 nights (taking in Green, Roughside, Flittingford, Wainhope & Kershopehead Bothies if possible).

The alternative would be to drive to somewhere like Haltwhistle / Haydon Bridge and leave my van parked up for the 3 days and ride north taking in a similar route above. If i opt for this, can anyone reccomend a parking spot for the 3 days too?

Thanks in advance, Hayden.

A couple of alternatives that I've done/tried.

The Sandstone Way, Hexham to Berwick or vice versa. There's a map you can buy for it. There's a station at both ends of the route. We did it with two bivvies: an afternoon; a full day and then a long morning http://bobwightman.blogspot.co.uk/2015/ ... e-way.html . It got quite popular a year or two ago and I heard there were some problems with bivvying at certain spots. The locals on here should have more info.

Philip Addyman (padonbike on here) created a route in and around Kielder Forest which again could be done over three days as there's bothies at suitable points. https://padonbike.wordpress.com/2017/10 ... ing-route/ We tried it between xmas and new year- http://bobwightman.blogspot.co.uk/2017/ ... brian.html . You'll need to check that the Army ranges aren't in use.

Thanks both and for the links to the blogs - looks perfect for what I plan on doing.

Where did you park up in Stonehaugh - is there a car park that way?

If you head to Stonehaugh from Hexham, go through the hamlet over the river, i.e. to the north side, and there's a car park on the left - no fee.
