26 Plus size - any good?

Post by Albs1973 »

Hi All

Anyone have any experience of this wheel size and what they ride like?

Wouldn't normally consider this size, but I'm thinking of doing a cheap build of a NOS instigator 1.0 frame, have most bits laying about. Apparently it'll take a 26+

Tried a 27.5 with a 2.6, ok on fork but a bit too much for rear.

Seen these wheels - any thoughts/experience of whether they will be any good? Spec sounds quite good and seem good value. Remember make from years back

Colour options a bit loud, but will suit frame

Anyone have some cheap 26+ tyres they don't want? I have a pair of brand new 26" schwalbe spiked tyres I'd sell or swap, one is an ice spiker pro, have to check on the other.

I used 26plus a couple of years ago on my Surly Troll, I absolutely loved it. My Troll was the MK1 which could only take the 2.75 tires safely so I used the Surly Dirt Wizard 26x2.75 120tpi rubber, set at 15psi front and 16 rear mounted on tubed Sun Ringle MTX33 rims.
The combo worked really well, over rough grounds it would eat the rocks up but was still nimble, being 26" makes no difference.

I use 26+ Surly Extra terrestrial's on my Salsa Mukluk when it's in fair weather mode,
Excellent tyres and a really good size...benefits of a fatter tyre but still quite low drag
Compared to a full fat tyre....

I have a Troll too, the orange model. Not ridden much and lent it out. May have to try this.

I have some alpkit rumpus 27.5 with the new schwalbe smart Sam 2.6 tyres, not quite the bigger plus size which the wheels are obv intended for, but love 2.6 tyres in 29 flavour. Have nobby nics on a KM. Smart SAMs are great tyres in 2.25 so looking fwd to trying this new bigger size. Was hoping these might fit the troll if wheel is right back in the dropout, maybe pushing clearance but worth a try I reckon given surlys generous clearance

The dirt wizards look great, and being surly you know they should fit, but always seem expensive everywhere

The new gen 2 Troll can take up to 26x3.0 now which opens up possibilities, both the Dirtwizard and Knard are available in 3.0 versions, WTB also do the Ranger in 2.8 and 3.0 versions.
