Very much depends on the weather that weekend!

It may be too warm or not warm enough but I would imagine that it is an eminently suitable bag as long as you have a good sleeping mat between you, the compressed down under you and the ground. If it's a bit chilly that weekend, supplement the bag with dry merino socks and a cosy hat

Anyone ever used two mats? I have an inflatable with no insulation but with lots of cutouts to let the bag loft. This will still be cold in Jan so am going to get a self inflating mat of some sort too. Considering a lightweight one (maybe alpkit airo 120?) and maybe combining with the inflatable. Double warmth! Or maybe just stupid...

For winter I'd invest in a proper full length mat. You'll lose much more heat to the ground than to the air at that time I'd year.
The Alpkit Airo is ok, but long term you'd be better getting a neoair or something eith a high R rating (how much it insulates you)
As long as you have a bag rated to zero comfort you'll be ok. You can always layer up with some thermals and a jacket.
More important is where you spend the night. Out in the open is great for looking at the stars but it'll be cold. In a forest will be much warmer.

I'm trying to stop myself buying an Downmat HL. It's complete overkill, and crazy expensive... but then by the same token, I also want to do a Nordic circle bikepacking trip at some point, and I'm guessing that would be fairly handy for that.

Cough... Winterlite... use mine all year round now, only 40g heavier than Hyperlite.

It makes perfect sense but sadly it's an idea scuppered by the laws of physics and you won't really be any warmer than you would be just sleeping on the Airo.

Was thinking it would be slippery but not sure how physics would get in the way. Would expect no more insulation from the mats than what the airo would give but seeing as the underside of the bag could still loft surely there would still be an advantage there? Anyway, been looking and can get a downmat 5 for £80 so will probably just get that.

No matter what you do, an unisulated mat will always remain an uninsulated mat, so convection within the mat will still take place. Place it on top of an insulated mat - there'll be no benefit, place it under an insulated mat - there'll be no benefit. The physics bit is the transfer of heat through the wonder of convection ... if air's free to move, then convection takes place.

I've also read that the R value of the two mats combine to give a higher value.
