Ramin One (in a 1-off colour, 'just 'cos') - lighter than my Jones and (sorry but) it's a great 'beater 'packer' for trips that involve being bounced around in a bike pile on a jeep roof for 8 hours at a time. Deore kit and stock parts, only the wheels (WTB Frequency rims on XT hubs) were upgraded. TBH for 25% of the price of the Jones it's >80% of the ride.

Image
My Jones, the 100% ride. Main MTB/tourer of sorts for the 5 years I've had it. The Ti fork is usually on another bike but this was it set up for a big ride where I could definately be arsed to save the 400g.

Image
Roadie-Jones. Big Apple 2.0s and bigger/more gears.

Image
My 650B rando-tourer-'packer project bike, V4. For road trips and less technical tracks, general local exploring, etc.

All use Wildcat bags and bar harness plus a Revelate gas tank, with an Alpkit possum or full framebag on the Jones.

My Genesis Longitude setup for a 5 day trip in Norway last week. Pretty much stock bike with a mix of Alpamayo, Alpkit and Apidura bags, and Blackburn fork cages.

This one truly is my inbred. There won't be another quite like this one anywhere, since a friend and I sprayed this frame together.

Some may recall this was beige not too long ago.

Just thinking how nice that looks - simple and clutter-free. It looks like it 'wants' to be ridden.

I can promise you, right now it has a lot more mud on it! That was taken in the rain five mins after finishing building it back up.

Mine is actually 650B but close enough that no-one notices

Same luggage as before but on another bike

Planet X London Road, tried it on this as it would enable me to cover greater distances on easier ground as it has gears

21 years old and still going — this was set up for WRT this year. I live far too far from anything remotely challenging to be able to justify a new one.

Image

I'll be practising TLS next time I ride it, in a couple of weeks' time

I used to have that exact same bike! I upgraded the forks and rear shock (they were elastomers weren't they?).

The rear one snapped at the top of the firmounth after an hour hour and a half slog up leaving me a two hour walk back to the car in shimano mtb racing shoes....

I hated that bike....

Eye cancer!
My friends and I just use the term 'bad P-word' to describe them. Goes back to when they used MCUs for shocks.

But I must say great that you're still riding it :-bd

It looks like a stick, but it's a homemade mudguard to keep the spring and shock free of grit — there are a number of irreplaceable or expensive-to-replace parts, so I've had to take extra steps to protect it and eke out as much life as I can. I also wrap the spring/shock in a neoprene boot when out, but storing it with the neoprene on invites rust, and a rusty shock rod will cause the seal to fail, and if the seal fails then it's a glorified pogo stick, if you get my drift. I have a new mudguard on order that should simplify this a bit.

Thanks.

On new MCUs it rode pretty well, but give 'em a few weeks and it was a bit ropey. That said, this was one of the first with MCUs + oil shocks (ODS2 I think). The coils give a much more controlled ride, and I discovered with the extra weight on WRT that it's very plush indeed once you get it off the end-stops. There's an air-shock conversion, which would be a better option, but these days it's eye-wateringly pricey.

I'm sure if I rode a more up-to-date bike then I'd notice all the compromises on this one, but it's the only full-susser I've ever ridden, so to me it rides well enough to enjoy the scenery

Sorry, didn't mean it aimed at you or that way at all. I've got loads of road bike + luggage experience before bikepacking became bikepacking for instance me on day 2 of 5 in the one below in 2010, just thought I'd keep them to myself on this forum as they never involve any sleeping kit, just the expectation I'll be riding through the night(s).

That's ok, I guessed it wasn't aimed a me, just joking about that hence the  The forum does have an off-road bias (nothing wrong with that) but I do like looking at all types of bike. It was great to see the various set-ups people took on the Transcontinental Race when I was following that. My usual bike is a singlespeed which I love but I tried my luggage on the 'adventure' bike (my commuter) as I was thinking about trips where I wanted to cover greater distances on easier ground. More bikes:-
