PF30 Bottom bracket conversion

Post by Chicken Legs »

I appreciate this may have already been done to death but I want to convert a PF30 to take a Hope threaded bottom bracket.

Fed up with the creaking and need a permanent fix, what have people used ?

I think that's what the t-47 standard within a standard was meant to address. I don't know much about it beyond remembering the press release

Is it not dependent on the cause of the creak?

If it's bearing wear an adapter/hope bb would solve it.

If it's poor frame/bb manufacturing tolerance or how the bb30 is installed. Installing an adapter may not fix the creak.

Something like this might help, it's effectively a BB with a built in 'adapter' to hold the bearings: https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Wheels-Manufac ... 106932.htm

I've used an FSA aluminium sleeve in my spearfish for about two years now....it gets covered in some sort of lock tight, pressed into the big, creaky hole, then you can just thread a hollowtech BB in, and away you go as normal.....I think it was about £10-£15?

This one, but half that price!

Is this SF early or later split frame?
The split frame BB is 92mm wide so are you saying the adaptors with HT2 bearings sit 'inside' the BB?
If so how do you maintain chain line and what fixes the adaptor in place?
Only asking because will be doing this over winter so this is a timely thread.
Some photos wold be helpful.

edit
Just found this.

re edit - praxis conversion not for 92mm BB.
Zazen - nothing happens next this is it.

Hope do their own step down PF30 bottom bracket for 24mm spindle cranks. I also have plenty of experience with the Praxis adaptor and its been a god send for all the carbon road frames I have to deal with at work.

I have gone with the Wheels Manufacturing bottom bracket, Karl has highly recommended it :-bd

I took the plunge recently and bought the wheels manufacturing BB, the one with angular bearings as I was fed up with my squeaking pf one.
Soooo smooth by comparison. Bloody expensive to start with but once it's in bearing replacement is simple.

Can anyone tell me whether it's possible to fit a square taper BB to one of these? I can't see why not but realise, I could be missing something very obvious.

I wondered the same which I was considering buying a PF30 bike from a friend. Didn't come up with a definitive answer, but one thing which might be restrictive is the depth of the threads in the adapter, i.e. do the threads go far enough in to take a non-outboard BB?

A friend has used an adapter on his road bike to go from PF to square taper so it can be done. I don't know if it was that make of adapter but probably as that seems the most common. If you buy it from Wiggle to see if it will work and if these is not enough depth of thread it's easy to return and free to do so.

Reckon I'll give one a whirl - if it works, it'll save me having to buy new cranks.
