I've had both eTrex 20 and Dakota 20 ... I kept the Dakota but either would be up to the job.

The eTrex I had was the older version, not the 'X'. It worked fine but I prefer the touch screen on the Dakota.

I actually go the other way. I'd take the joystick of the old etrex 30 that I have over a touchscreen any day.

there's quite a few of these garmin etrex vista units around on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Garmin-eTrex- ... Swq1JZGH1h
are they worth considering?

Will they accept an sd card? If not, I wouldn't bother as you'll have limited mapping options.

No it seems it doesn't, but the vista hcx & Cx do. Thanks

+1 for the Dakota.

It replaced the eTrex one that died but that was fine too.

Do they have colour screens capable of making the most from OS type mapping?

I suspect you may be pushed for space with 64MB of storage for mapping.

My trusty Etrex20 (not the newer X model) will take a 2GB SD card and hold a large chunk of UK OS maps. Some people love the touch screen of the other models, but for me, simple is better and AA batteries can be sourced most anywhere. Works best with Energizer Lithium Ultra batteries.

Thanks for the reply, I've googlized the sd capacity of these and it looks like the Cx and hcx accepted upto 2gb sd storage.
"According to the FAQ section of Garmin's website:

Question: What is the largest size microSD card that I can use in my X-series GPS unit?

Answer: At this time, the 2 GB cards are the largest microSD cards that can be used for the X-series GPS units. However, the X-series GPS units are not compatible with the San Disk Ultra II cards and therefore we do not recommend using the Ultra II micro SD cards with any of the X units."
