The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Post by jameso »

Got the event poster finished.

(edit - basic site now up, http://torino-nice.weebly.com/ )

For anyone interested in mixed terrain routes, the plan is to run a version of our Turin-Nice last summer as a rally ride / checkpoint-free Randonee. Same basis as any other self-supported event with the idea being that it's not particularly biased to any one type of bike or rider, from memory approx 50% of riding time is on tarmac including a couple of big cols linking sections of high altitude stradas, hence the 'Rally' idea. A few sections would be tough going on a light CX bike but faster than on a mountain bike over many other sections so it makes bike and tyre choice interesting. It's probably under 5 full days if you're quick, 7-8 if you take it easy. There is a fair bit of climbing - 25,000m or so at a guess, a lot of riding above 2000m.

Ideally it'll be early summer, date tbc based on suiting a few interested entrants. I'm keen to ride it again and will refine the route to take in the best of what we found. Molini di Triora pool will be staying in for anyone wanting a wash/dip before arriving in Nice!

No Spot requirements, could set up a tracker page if there's interest. I'll provide a cue sheet and GPX well ahead of the start. Some sort of site due when I figure that out. Just judging interest for now.

A few pics for a fair idea of terrain, there's also a trip report in the Trips and Adventures forum.

Very interested James.

Keen to get a foreign adventure in next year.

Would need to work out logistics and stuff, but that could all be sorted later.

Also VERY interested (dependent on date clashes with other stuff).

Looks bloody lovely and covers parts of Italy and France I've never ridden.

I'm interested in this. I think this would be more my style than HTR...and would save me from entering Navad.

Like the look of that, a lot.

700km in 5 days if you're quick. Really? That would imply it's quite tough going then...

Averagely quick and enjoying French/Italian lunches or social bivies, rather than 'proper quick' : ) The climbing per 24hr period would make it hard if you aimed for ~2.5 days and there's a lot of riding high up. It's not inherently hard though.

I put 3-7 days here. Just a guide.

Just a random thought (I've been on the red wine), if the start date isn't set why not set it to follow on from something else, I'm thinking the Tuscanny Trail.

Looks great. I'm certainly interested but it would of course depend on the dates.

Going for a start date of Friday June 17th. That gives us benefit of a full moon over the weekend, cheaper mid-week flights and just one weekend away. Avoids finishing in Nice on a weekend, for all but the fastest.

I'm 'tentatively' in then.

June is a relatively good month for me.

More details please
(I know you may not have more details, but I still want more :-bd )

So two weeks recovery from the Highland Trail - that's enough, right? :???:

FLV, good stuff. The site has the basics, it's a pretty simple site but covers most apart from the date and the route (ha..) the date is 17th June, the route is getting a few tweaks and will be sent out later. Any q's let me know. There's a 'Contact' page on the site that I'll use to collect emails for a group mail for the route and start details.

Ian, should be a warm, well-fed and pretty much HAB-free recovery ride then? :-bd

I'd love to come along but for the above reason won't make it for this edition. Body and family reasons rule it out I reckon.

Will save some annual leave for 2017 though :-bd

Before I fix a date on the site, the other option would be the full moon of mid Sept, start date 14th. Less daylight and cooler, a nice time in the Alps usually. Any preferences for that as a sort of season-ender?

Easy either way.

Personally i'd prefer a new moon. You get to see the stars and I dont have the moon shining in my face all night while trying to sleep.

Good point. Early July or early Sept in that case.

How hot is it likely to be early July?

It was pretty hot in the far eastern area droppoing down to near Dronero and as we got close to the south coast in mid-late July last year, not unbearable but maybe 35 or so.

I could do it in Sept (funds allowing) but not June.

Interested in his a lot!
Need to finalise dates, but the Sept. slot would probably work better for me.
All looks excellent though.
Cheers
Adam.
