A South Wales Loop

Post by larsmars »

Hi All,

Just returned from riding around the Beacons -- my first bikepacking trip and first visit to Brecon. What a gorgeous area! Here's my route with some geotagged photos.

Big thanks to Ian Barrington for pointing me to the EWE route and some of his local loops on Strava!

Cheers,
Lars

Wow, that's some "first time bikepacking" trip. Nice one.

Length: 238 miles
Duration: 2 days.
You're not serious are you?

Either way, good ride. *doffs cap*

Glad the route tips were helpful too

Good lord, that is some ride!

I'd struggle with that on flat roads!

Haha, definitely NOT two days! It took me 2 days just to get from Newport to Brecon on those squirrely trails! I think the Everytrail website must be calculating 2 days based on total moving time from my GPX tracks. It was over 7 days in total! I was not in a hurry!

My Strava page shows more accurate stats!

I did some loaded pannier touring in Central America over the last year with my GF, but this was my first time riding on my trail bike with a bikepacking setup. It's very liberating to ditch that weight!

I really enjoyed reading that, Lars. I'm thinking about taking up mountain biking, but after seeing the effects of mud I'm not so sure... Did you ever manage to clean your bike and kit?

Great write-up and pics. Particularly like the one of the horse looking like Iggy Pop lost in a Welsh downpour.

I'm pondering an abbreviated weekend version of this myself. Train to Newport and head north-west is hand see what happens is my tentative plan. Kinda hoping it might be a bit drier than your trip though :???:
